Postby 96wizard » Fri Jun 08, 2012 6:01 pm

Hi, I'm looking for a Charge Relay p/n 8970634410 (brown) to suit a 96 MU Wizard 3.1 either new or secondhand.
Also looking for the best place to buy a new or reconditioned alternator.

If its the Same as your other relays you can use a normal one until you find a proper one mines had a normal relay in it for over a year. Auto shop wanted big $$$ for one.

Someone had allready swapped it with the horn relay but the charge, timing belt and other lights wouldn't come on and the alt stopped charging.
I put the brown relay back in the correct spot and the warning lights operate properly but the alt won't start charging until the engine revs reach 2500.
Before I replace the alt, I just wouldn't mind trying another relay.
Interesting that the horn sounded crap until I swapped the normal relay back for the horn, sounds much better now!
Once I find another charge relay, I might pull one apart to see whats different about it.

Well it got the better of me and I pulled the cover off of the brown charge relay as well as one of the standard black ones.
The physical layout and operation is exactly the same but the coil windings are different.
The standard black relay operates at well below 12v where as the brown charge relay only operates when the battery volts exceeds 12v.
I'm now looking for a replacement alternator.

Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Yes, probably no difference. Blue one has unique pin layout where as brown one has exactly the same pin layout as any standard relay.
At the moment it doesn't make any difference to the alternator if the relay is in or out, just heater/AC won't work without it.
Even with the relay out, the revs need to go above 2500 before it starts charging. Assuming a faulty Alt.

looking at ebay link the seller is tryining to pass off the standard relay as a charge. Ive allready got fuse box full of those relays going off the part number.
If someone can confirm that the holden rodeo 4jb1 charge relay is the same as isuzu wizard \mu 4jg2, then this nightmare will be over

How many pins on the wizard charge relay and photos might help did you try the 1 from the mu in the wizard if it fits it.
I know my 3.1 has a blue charge relay in it and has 5 pins the brown relays have a different pin set up I think.

Just wondering if the brown 1 has any numbers on it. is that the 1 you need I have a few auto sparkies near my place but im bit out of action at the moment I just got out of hospital after a operation last Friday.
My 94 mu has a blue relay in it I have never pulled it out to have a look at the pins on it and I don't know if a 97 on jackaroo might be the same 1 that your after.

hope your op went well steve. Il have a search around darwin tommorow . Bursons might have 1. The brown charge relay seems to have the generic 5 pin layout , whereas the blue charge relay has a unique 5 pin layout. Im after a new brown one, surely they still make em. If its the same as a 4jb1t rodeo (which sold for14years?) charge relay theyd be available new?

I had a search around the web for you but didn't find much all blue ones in the uk ebay.

The description in this listing is wrong. The brown 'Charge Relay' requires a higher voltage to operate than the standard black relays. This is to ensure that the alternator is actually charging and that it's output is above 12V. If you plug a standard black one in, in-place of the brown one, the dash lights will all go out and the Heater/AC system will all work after start up even if the alternator is not charging.

No, all the Rodeos and Jackaroos that I looked at had the blue charge relays.
