Where to buy an MU?

Postby Jordan63 » Sat Aug 29, 2009 8:54 pm

Hi all, i know when i got my mu it was off a friend who just happened to have it. but after searching on the internet it seems that new zealand is over run by them while here in Australia there is about 6 of them for sale on all the car sites, and pickles auctions? forget about it they havent heard of isuzu. also in new zealand they are far cheaper... so my question is. would it be a better option to ship an mu over from new zealand or to just buy one here in Australia and pay a couple of thousand more?

Really comes down to how much it will cost to ship it from NZ to Aus.
Cheers,
Andrew

You can only do a personal import of an MU which means you need to have lived in the country and owned the car as well for a year, then it costs (I can't remember how much Kirien (sp) said it cost him bit I think it was around 5 grand, and the car needs to be in A1 condition).

With the price difference it could be worth it for a later model but you have to live and work here for a whole year. That includes supporting the All blacks for a year.

I know people who've bought cars in Japan and then they have been shipped to NZ for around $2000-$3000. Is this an entirely different system?

Yup, Oz has STRICT laws on importation of second-hand vehicles. I brought mine here from NZ. Even after you qualify there's LOTS of red tape and Government Departments whose job it is to make the process as difficult as humanly possible.

You can import vehicles into Australia if they are over 15 years old. You would have to do a search to find out how to do it.

No that was stopped in 2006 and now it will be 30 year old cars, so you can bring in up to 89 model as this is where they stopped it and that will stay until 2019, good old government... (bunch of over paid people that get chauffeured around)

30 years will be 79 You have to wait anouther 11 years to use this method. Luckily the Mus will still be good then like series 1 and 2 landrovers
