engine oil type

Postby Carrickb » Thu Jan 16, 2014 3:53 pm

Hi, I have a 1991 Isuzu MU 2.8 Turbo Diesel (4JB1-T)
I am looking to change the oil... at the last service Penrite PRO 15 PLUS 15W-50 (Mineral) was used...
The engine goes great guns, only leaks a couple drops now and then.

Just wondering what you guys think/use?
Mineral? Synthetic?
SAE 15W-50?

15w50 sounds a little heavy but with your current temps it sort of makes sense.
Normal oil is 15w40 with a Ch4 or higher spec. Its also better if its sold as a diesel oil. That Penrite oil was petrol or light duty diesel.
From the Penrite site I got these 2 as recommended for the 4jg2 which is the same oil wise.

previously used penrite hpr diesel 15?
But up ere it just became a hassle to buy in 20l drums ie. Price & availibility
most places only sell it 5 litres..
So switched to castrol gtx diesel 15.40 . Sometimes you can get it for under $100 aussie queens.

if you have run mineral previously stick to it.
Synthetic has a bad habit of causing leaks in engines that have previously run on mineral.
my rec is either the penrite diesel 15w40 or gtx 15w40 as above. Both good oils.

The boys on here might have a trick.
Get the engine upto running temp.
Drop the sump. - Wait (about 1 beer - Two beers if you can be bothered to wait)
Remove the oil filter quickly and dont burn yourself on the exhaust.
New filter on, replace sump bolt, new oil.
Degrease down the side of the engine where all the bloody oil came out the silly placed filter.

If you have a body lift there is more room than you expect but if not bad luck. I do mine by taking the front wheel off and removing the rubber cover on the inner guard. Its a fiddle on an intercooled engine as the filter has to be turned over then comes out over the brake line. If you mu is not intercooled you can reach the filter from above with a filter tool that grips the filter from above and it should lift out fairly easy. My bighorn has factory intercooler so cant verify this method. The 3.1 has an easyer to get at filter but it makes a bigger mess. It doesnt drip into the exhaust expansion joint though.

managed to change it out with few dramas, got hold of the wrong filter to start with..repco ROF-39 and ryco z178a are definitely the wrong filters, instead changed it out with what was there before nippon max M0319 which is the same as a ryco z402... she was a tight squeeze to get in and out, might try a filter wrench that grabs the top instead of the sides next time.

those filters fit the gear drive version of the 4jb1 found in Rodeo and Jackeroo and pre 88 bighorns. Just to make sure you remain confused they are described in all the filter books as non intercooled or intercooled which in the case of the Mu isnt true
