time to shoot it?

Postby geeves » Tue Aug 05, 2014 5:44 pm

Took the old bighorn to the mechanics today for its 6 monthly Wof check. (roadworthy inspection) Mechanic offered me a seat before telling me what it needed.

I think the time has come for the inevitable to happen

Its an 89 with 2.8 so not that many parts fit yours.
I dont have space to wreck it so it will go as one unit. Still have to swap the locker back to lsd and the new winch for the old etc before it goes on trademe.

Not having regular checks on our vehicles here in Qld from that report I would say it looks like most 4wds here, used + loved

true. Ive only had it 19 years. Theres nothing serious on the list but the number of small things means its heading for the glue factory.

Oh, they are one of those lazy places that can't even be bothered adjusting your headlights for you.
And wtf is that note about it being dirty underneath?!

Links dead, what did you buy?

And how much is your one going to go for?

The joys of being honest. I did tell him that the car was going to be sold and things like the damaged sills have been there nearly 10 years without issue. He would of adjusted the lights had it been the only fault. Im sure he did the smoke test on a cold engine.
New car is a 95 swb bighorn 3.1 manual. Already has alloy bull bar snorkle and small lift. 220k and a little more than I wanted to pay but with the mods already done its not a bad deal.
Old wagon will be sold on Mu mags and 31 inch Savero MT tyres that measured 8mm tread by the wof guy. It will have a Ramsey 8000lb winch (makes a few funny noises and may be not long for this world) and lsd rear diff (the diff and winch have to swap before sale) Probably put a start of 600 and buy now of 1500 on trademe but its a couple of weeks away unless someone makes me an offer I cant refuse. (no deal will include the rear locker or new winch. Im keeping those) Also have to work out if I can swap the cargo barrier. Motor is still a honey.

Its sitting on my front lawn now :D
Needs front tow hook upgraded from factory My winch fitted into the bar (does anyone know what needs to be done to an early tjm bar to take a winch) The rear hooks looked at to see if they are completly kosher and see how to improve the towbar My muds bolt on and the fan belts squeal cold and the radio needs fixing All minor things really

if you are going to fit a winch to that bar i would lower it away from the body first, not sure about mounting winch, is it able to have a winch on it? if not remove bar and get a alloy welder to make a cradle in the bar for you, least it will look tidy and factory then

early tjm bar. Note on it says optional steel winch carrier required. In the likly chance I cant buy the correct part I know a local engineer (Brian Howett) thats bound to be able to make it and sort the front tow hooks at the same time.
Taking the locker out of the old truck today I found several things the wof man missed. He noted the front passenger seat mount seemed loose I found the cracked floor that caused it and right next to it the front u joint in the rear shaft is shot. Add to that the broken hinge on the front passenger door he missed and it all looks grim. Might have to seriously consider a picapart offer and save the trademe fee.

I would be hoping for more than the cost of springs but there is also a set of 4 Mu mags a snorkel 31 inch savero mt tyres a good engine a reasonable lsd dif a gearbox that only crunches in 4th Recaro seats and a good barely year old stereo. Even the battery in it now looks new. (550cca and was swapped out of the new bighhorn so the bigger battery will power the winch) A Hayman reese style towbar with rated hooks attached Good cvs shocks etc
I would do quite well out of it if I wrecked it but Im not doing that again. I just dont have time or room.

It sold to a car wreckers in Hamilton for 1220. That makes the trade up cost only 3300. They bought a truck but when the found it still drives they drove it away.

Did the snorkel set up go with it? If not and if it's been fitted in a way which it could be re used would you mind passing on the details of the wrecker? :D
