Replacement Warn M8000 cable.

Postby pencil » Mon Dec 01, 2014 12:02 pm

Hi All,

Been looking at this forum for some time and there is an abundance of good knowledge to put to use, but still trying to find something I can add.

I picked myself up a 98 2.8 dual cab rodeo some time ago and it came with a Warn M8000 but no cable. (Looks to have seen some use). Picked it up as a knock around truck that I can take off road and will take a beating so not too worried.
Anyone know of some cheaper options with regards to replacement cables that are easy to pick up around the NSW Central Coast region or even Hornsby area?

It probably won't get much use but is there when I need it.

Certainly online purchase whilst easy enough seems to be outweighed by the shipping costs.

I replaced the steel cable on my 9500 winch with a 9.5mm dyneema from this aliexpress seller
http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product ... 89030.html
To NZ this ones $103 US not sure if the price changes to Aus
8mm will be fine on a 8000 winch and this has the protective sleeve to combat heat from the drum

5/16" or 3/8" steele cable work fine for a 8k lbs winch.

Did your winch support the Dymeem rope? I understand that the winch needs a cone type clutch otherwise the clutch can heat and melt the rope.
Justa thought to check before you invest your hard earned money :)

yes and make sure your drum on the winch can support the dymeema rope, as it gets much tighter on the drum and can crush them

"dymeema rope, as it gets much tighter on the drum and can crush them"
Hadnt heard that before but had heard of dynema melting. Dyneema looses most of its strength by about 70C which isnt that hot and most winchis have a brake in the drum which can easily heat up to that if you are in the habit of driving the rope out Sometimes you might need to power out a meter or 2 to reposition which is ok but more than that you should be releasing the clutch and pulling it out anyway) If you have a cone or external brake its ok If you dot power out its ok.
Ive heard of competition trucks loweing themselves backwards on the winch. Do this on a drum brake and dyneema and it will melt. (weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee bump)

That option http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product ... 89030.html look pretty good.

The M8000 seems to support synthetic rope according to the Warn site.
The current set up has a roller style guide on the bar as opposed to the normal guide you see in use with synthetic rope. Will this need to be changed?
Certainly from a safety standpoint the synthetic would seem a better choice IMO. I have seen the damage steel cable does when it snaps and hits a tree therefore would hate to be in it's path and human.
As far as lifespan goes and considering it will only see minimal use what is folks opinion on the steel cable as a better option than the rope though? The winch is concealed in a TJM bull bar so UV is minimal.

Alloy fairleed is better with synthetic as there is nothing to catch I picked up mine on trademe cheap as it didnt match the sellers bar I made my bar fit it. They might even be on aliexpress.
Both have a design life around 2 years.
