bottle jacks

Postby wombat » Sat Nov 21, 2009 5:37 pm

hi guys,
like most of you i have a 2 inch suspension lift on my mu and am running larger tyres (265/75/16) and the standard bottle just wont come close to lifting the car high enough to change a wheel. i have a trolley jack at my dads i use for basic servicing but want something for the 1 in a million chance of getting a flat while driving on the road. does any one have a similar problem. its not essential, but just for peace of mind. is there a particular brand you use and whats the max height on them.

cheers

You could get a peice of 4x2 wood to sit the jack on. it shuld be stable enuff to change a tyre, just dont rock the vehicle too much with no wheel on.

hey guys,
think i'll try the 2x4 that muzila suggested. i have plenty laying around here. it'll do untill i get something more perminant. i saw an 8 ton hydraulic bottle jack selling for pretty cheap. it stands at 230mm has another 147mm lifting height and 80mm adjusting height. so something like that would be nice

Standard jack should lift that quite happily front and back but if you are going to buy another jack anyway why not get a High lift or one of its clones?
230mm is going to be a tight fit under your rear diff plates when changing a rear tyre

i have measured the back and i should have just enough room to slide the jack under. i have around 270mm of clearance for the front and my standard jack will only extend to a max of 300mm. i do like the hi lift but i really don't need one. i mostly go out in a small group where there is always one other person with one, and for the stuff i ido i haven't had to use one.

The standard bottle jack opens in 3 sections giving at a guess 400mm. I can lift mine on 32s enough in the garage but not sure it would be always enough on a trail.
