Towing Stability

Postby elcelido » Wed Aug 12, 2015 1:02 pm

I am towing a 19ft Retreat van and experiencing considerable sway, when something big (B-Doubles etc) pass me. I am running the tryes at 42PSI on the MUX and have a Hayman Reece leveller system fitted. I am also running the caravan tyres at 42PSI and the dual axel system is fitted with a Dexter Anti Sway Control. So I feel I am doing all the right things. Any ideas?

42 sounds very high. try going down to 35 and see if it makes better or worse. Caravans are not generally that heavy for the size but how they are loaded can make a big difference. Also setting up load correcting devices can hinder more than help if set wrong

you will need lots of load on the rear as the coil rear suspension will make it wonder all over the road

To isuzurob,
I had a prado (same rear suspension) and had no problems. To geeves, what is the correct setting?

have to play till you find what works but starting with rated tyre pressures plus 5psi and a drawbar load as specified in the handbook is a good start
