TF chassis steering box repair

Postby DirtyHarry » Tue Jan 17, 2017 8:33 pm

My steering box seems to be worn out. I have adjusted it almost to the point where the steering does not return to centre. I there a way I can rebuild the steering box?

As long as yours is the reticulating ball type not rack and pinion they are common across the entire range. A box out of a much earlier bighorn trooper or ute will fit.
You can rebuild it but pats are hard to get and if the caseings are worn you are back to square one

I see. I think its the reticulating ball type. How would I know. What mission is it to take the box out to inspect?

If the tie rods from the wheels go to another arm which connects to a box on one chassis rail and an arm on the other it is reticulating ball. If the tie rods go into a long tube which the steering column is also attached to it is rack and pinion. Rack and pinion should only be the case after about 98.
Getting out should be just undo the steering column from the box remove the hydrolic pipes (catch the fluid) remove front wheels disconect the 2 outer tie rod joints disconec the joint on the box and the idler arm Remove the entire linkage ( it can be done without this step but requires more swear words) undo the 4 bolts that hold the box to the chassis and remove. This worked in my old bighorn and a Mu I wrecked but I had to take the radiator out in my 94 bighorn to get room to get the box past everything. It wasnt nice finding I had to drain the radiator in the garage with the car on blocks

Once I do find one, what can I check on it to make sure it will serve me well for some time to come?

Hi Stardog

That's correct yes. I know one or two of the guys. I think the site you talking about is www.isuzuoffroad.co.za
I will put up a post and ask them.

Thanks
