4JG2 engine refurbishment

Postby Grasshopper » Fri Feb 17, 2017 8:54 am

My 1996 3.1 Diesel engine has a cracked head. Local mechanics have quoted me between $8000 - $10,000 to recondition whole engine and around $4000 just to do head with no guarantees against internal engine failure.

I'm away from the big city's but have looked on trade me at offer from Isuzu Parts Specialists who will Refurbish 4JG2 engine for $2750.00.
Has anybody used this service and if so how is your vehicle now operating.
I am seriously interested in taking up this offer and transporting my Bighorn there if it all checks out ok.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Cant help with the second hand engine but remember 5 or 6 hours to fit the engine on top of the price. If the engine was good before I would still condsider the head replacement. Once you take the head off you will know if there is other damage. Head for my wizard about 4 years ago was 1600 to buy plus fitting

Thanks, head removed and no apparent damage to cylinder walls or pistons.

isuzupartsspecialist may be able to supply a good used or new head. Only other way is keep an eye on trademe. If the car isnt a daily driver you can get a head through aliexpress but it will be a month to get to you

8--10k for a recon engine that's just plain robbery I know a mob in Sydney that pull your engine and fit a recon engine on exchange basis for 4k and that's for 4jb1t or 4jg2t same price.
And 4k for a head I thought that's a bit steep on price as well.

Genuine head that price is understandable. everyone uses Chinese heads though which are fine. Wont be change from 2k though all up unless you use a second hand head but if you do get it crack tested

The local garages advised that they have to install new radiator etc to be able to guarantee their work which is understandable. So those quotes for head replacement and full engine reco cover that cost as well. I guess they have overhead costs etc that they need to cover.
The Isuzu Parts Specialists offer at $2750.00 appears to cover removal/installation of new head, cylinder sleeves, rings and big end bearings which is not a complete recondition but sounds pretty reasonable if your engine is not already excessively worn i.e using oil.
