200,000 km Service 1998 4jb1t rodeo(Aus)

Postby 98Rodeo » Wed Jan 06, 2010 11:20 am

My 200,000 is getting pretty close now and am sstarting to wonder how far i should go....
i bought the car at 150,000 and dont really know the service history as it was my dads and he just took it to the so called 'mechanics' up the road

so i was thinking as its a 12 yo car now...

replace all the hoses and coolant flush
adjust tappets (no idea if this has ever been done)
timing belt/chain (which one does mine have)
geabox and transfer oils
front diff oil (did the rear not so long ago)
wheel bearings and service hubs
brake fluid and adjust handbrake

anything else that i shoudlt think about?
this is kinda a 200,000 and a jsut bought the car so change everything service, only had it for a year now

Thanks

Geoff

nothing on there that would hurt but I wouldnt bother with the wheel bearings except maybe a regrease.
The easy way to tell if its a gear or belt drive is to look if its a plastic or metal timing cover. plastic = belt
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Based on experience with my old 94 model Rodeo, the steering needed a bit of attention soon after 200,000ks, I had to put in a new idler arm bearing, drag link and lower ball joints. Problem with all these joints are they are sealed and so you cant lubricate them - the replacements all had grease nipples so they should last better.

The only other thing I would have a good look at is the power-steering pressure hose - it runs from the pump to a metal fitting down next to the radiator. The hose right at the fitting on the pump end is notorious for springing a leak. If there are bubbles in the hose then it is getting ready to blow, what happens is the crimped fitting is too tight, causing the ribs on the fitting to puncture the inner layer of the hose, so after a while the pressure of the fluid forces its way through the laminations of the hose until is bursts into the open, usually when you are miles from anywhere ;(. If it looks dicey, dont get a new one from your Holden dealer ($242!!!!) as it will also fail, take your old one to a hose doctor and get a new one made up by an expert for about $100

If you pick up a copy of the manual that Geeves keeps hidden in his mail account, it has the schedule in section 0, otherwise PM me your email and I can send you a copy of the appropriate bit - this section is only 274kb. the whole manual is about 40mg, so I wont even try sending that ;)
