any gains from snorkel?

Postby rodeoboy » Thu Oct 09, 2014 11:10 pm

Hey guys I am thinking of buying and installing a snorkel on my 3ltr turbo diesel .. Is there any noticeable performance gains from doing this?

Much improved mileage when in water :D

On it's own I don't think you'd feel much, it depends on how restrictive the factory intake is and if you have done any other mods.

i noticed gains from a snorkel in fuel economy.
I then installed a pod filter into the original air box and noticed better better and the engine would build RPM quicker.

It made a huge difference on the old bighorn but that had a diabolical inlet settup. The later Wizard and Bighorn have a much better standard settup so airflow wont change much. I assume the even newer Rodeo is good as well. Even so the fact that you get cold outside air must help a little and as the air comes from higher up the air cleaner should stay cleaner longer.
Ecconomy should improve but not by enough to cover the cost of the snorkel

OK so an update ... Had the snorkel installed on my ra rodeo and there hasn't been any noticeable gains so I'm striving for any type of performance gain as it drives like a slug ... Might try that pod filter idea and see if that works ...

high flow filter bigger exhaust. fit boost guage and adjust boost to 15psi at full throttle and 2500 revs fit egr guage adjust fuel till you get a little smoke at full throttle then back off. Keep an eye on egt. (can you adjust fuel on this engine?)
advance timing half a degree or so

But first, is it running correctly?
What do you mean by driving like a slug? Compared to what?

cant adjust fuel on them, smash the cat out of the exhaust behind the turbo, also if its a slug compared to others the airflow meters and injectors play up

Will look at a performance chip but a little skeptical as they are so expensive and dont pormise any large amounts of performance gains

How much is a large amount?
Assuming you wagon is 100kw then 5% is 5kw which is a lot as chips also increse torque range and ecconmy at the same time.
As said before though compare yours to another similar wagon You may have a fault that needs addressing

like i said there were faults with some of the new zealand ra 4jh1-t with lack of power, were caused by blocked cats, injectors with incorrect tips from new, airflow meters, and some egr, egr can be thrown away
