wont idle

Postby Laurence » Wed Jul 28, 2010 2:37 pm

1995 Isuzu Bighorn Diesel , eg when u pull up at intersection runs rough and stops, wait a minute or so and it starts to :( run again until u coast or pull up and it stops.I filled it up a week or so ago travelled about 50km,s and then stopped. When i returned to vehicle about 30 minutes later it started but run ragged and then it started to stop when u pulled up.I had the fuel filter changed and it seemed okay, drove home about 80k and it started again.Any ideas.

Many possibilities
First what mileage and has it been regularly maintained.
If when the engine is running you take off the oil filler cap Is there lots of fumes? This may indicate low compression
Cam belt might of skipped a tooth on the injector pump
Bad pump
Bad injectors
Air leak in the fuel line
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

I'd go with the fuel lines sucking air somewhere, seems strange that changing the fuel filter gave a temporary fix tho, the question is why?? Possable clogged strainer in fuel tank, try taking the in line off fuel filter and blowing low pressure air back into the tank, if it is clogged this will give it a temporary fix.

Sounds like it is sucking air in somewhere in the fuel line as I have just had that problem with my work truck.
A in line fuel filter had a hole in it and was sucking air in.

Yeah had similar problem years ago, truck would run fine then stop for no particular reason. Did alot of head scratching and thought it
could be blocked fuel pickup. So on the next time I was on a servo forecourt I grabbed a air hose and gave the fuel line a good blast.
About now I should mention that previously some lowlife had nicked the original fuel cap and I was using one of those rubber bung type
ones. Well it only took a few seconds for the pressure to build and the bung blew off with a almighty pop and covered half the forecourt
and some customers with diesel ....... took some explaining that one
The upside was that the truck ran fine after that.

Cheers

Hi thanks for your information.I took my vehicle to a local garage, they checked the fuel, checked the filter etc, couldnt find anything.I collected it Monday evening, ran okay around town, this morning drove it to Waihi and back , didnt stop the engine at Waihi, collected rent money and came home, no problem 110 k,s return trip.Turned the motor off at 10am , had a coffee and tried to start it again, started run rough, took it around the block and it stopped at each and every intersection.Would start again but had to wait a minute or so.Any more ideas Laurence

When it runs rough does it smoke?
whats engine temp like
My money is on a fuel problem and your engine has the electronically controlled injector pump I think. These are bad for wearing out the governor and all sorts of problems arise. You need to see a diesel specialist to sort and take both credit cards
If it is this the engine can suddenly overfuel which can severely overheat the engine very quickly the result is terminal

Isn't there another recent very similar thread around that had a solution? Something to do with the fuel filter of check valve?

Found it. This one viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1457

When my fuel cut of valve was playing up it was intermittent to start of with some times just wouldn't start if i left for ten mins then would go again didn't have any uneven running just intermittent starting, process of elimination led me to cut of valve after replacement never had any problems

hi guys, problem still not solved, spent well over $600 and no one seems to be able to fix it.Not only does it stop when idleing at intersections but when u remove foot from accelerator peddle, eg coming down a long slope or hill , on my way down Coromandel ranges yesterday suddenly found my self without power steering or power brakes. So far tank and filters cleaned and replaced but injectors have not been removed. When it cuts out all the dash redlights come on, if u turn the ignition switch off and turn it back on it generally starts straight away.Could this have anything to do fuel pumps.

Im thinking electrics or electronics. Check the wire to the fuel cut off solinoid but if yours has electronic control that might need a closer look.
All we can offer is typical things that go wrong as we never see the wagon and there could be something we all miss. Because of this there is no guarantee on any info given here but we do our best on the info we have
An example would be an alternator fault If the alternator fails it frequently kills the charge relay so you dont get a warning on the dash but its no longer charging the battery so the voltage slowly drops. Once it gets to 8 the fuel cutoff trips out and it looks like a fuel problem but its not.

could also be the IP is taking a crap, when my 5.9 cummins IP pump started to crap out on me it did the same thing, stalling when I came to a stop and sometimes while going down the road it would die while shifting gears.

Thanks to all u good folk for helping with my problem.I ended up taking my Isuzu to a local garage with a reputation for sorting out diesel problems.Explained to the owners son what had happened, he suggested that it was probably something to do with electronic engine control system. .Collected it later that day, they had cleaned wiring harness connector at injector pump, vacume gauge check between fuel filter pump and filter, checked for air faults etc, cost $98, told me to try it out and come back if not fixed.I have since done over 3000k and no problems.Sounds like the problem is sorted. Many thanks for your help
