Hate Mechanics

Postby nighthawk » Thu Aug 05, 2010 4:41 pm

Got my wife to drop my Mu of at a local Mechanic today as I work away from home. Rang him yesterday and told him that my overdrive light flashes from time to time and ask if he's got a scan tool, he said he has. So off the wife went, got a phone call few hours later by her, saying the mechinc could get no signals so he didnt charge her for that. What pisses me of, he told her that he checked the fluid levels in transfer case and auto box and said that they looked fine, as for the light flashing, he said that he didn't have the addaptor to suit the Mu ecu for the box and that no one would. Told my wife that it could cost up to 5 f....ing grand to fix and said I should get rid of it. last time I went to a Mechanic was when I was 18 so nothings changed in all those years. Question now is 1; how hard is it to read fault codes which i have a copy off(thanks geeves) 2 if it is what i suspect is a stuck solonoid in the box, can you free them up? and or get replacments? as my light only flashes from time to time and diss ingages the kick down capabilities somehow. even with engine off and keys on, it flashes sometimes.Dont really want to get rid of the Mu as I have busted a lot of knuckels to let it go that easy and it is a nice truck all around . cheers Volker

Is Gympie in central nowhere? No I just looked it up and it seems to be a reasonable city but still you get mechanics that claim they have never seen a jap import and cant be bothered learning that they are no different to the average holden ute
This auto is exactly the same as the one in the Jackeroo and it is a twin brother to jeep and prado and a million other cars. If your mechanic cant work on the Mu he also cant work on those.
First thought is find a qualified mechanic not just one that can pass exams ie one with a brain. Second is see an auto trans specialist.
From memory there is a procedure in the book about how to get the fault code onto the check trans light. Could be worth a try.
If all you loose is kickdown I would still suspect the tps
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

About 6 years ago i took my gemini to Gympie for a dyno tune. This was a $7000 motor and they sized it on the dyno :x they didn't put a fan infront of the car. Was not happy

Will do some more soul searching on the weekend, mm dyno and no fan, that is dodgy. if all fails there was a bloke selling a manual mu with a busted turbo at nambour swapmeet last saturday and only wanted 1400 for it. should have bought it and done a manual swap....
