4jb1 t help needed.

Postby bazza2541 » Sun Sep 05, 2010 8:12 am

Hi all, stoopid noob here, asking for a dumb question amnesty.

I have a 4jb1t mated to a 4jx1 turbo, airbox, down pipe and exhaust breathing through a Landrover TD5 FMIC. On the rollers at standard boost (0.9 bar/ 12psi) it produced 117.9bhp.

What do I need to bring it to where I want it, approx 200bhp?
Is there anywhere I could find a wiring diagram to find a supply for the rev counter?

Many thanks.

Standard trim they are 84kw which means you are already ahead of the game especially if that figure doesnt take into account transmission loss which is normaly guessed around 25%.
Why do you want 200hp? (160kw) You already have tons more torque than a 200hp petrol engine.
Things to get more power always come at a cost on the life of the engine but first up the boost to 15 to 20psi. Fit a intercooler if you dont already have one. Fit a exhaust temp guage Fit a 3 inch exhaust. Up the fuel and slightly advance the injector timing. This will get you to 120kw give or take but you will find high EGT a problem. To go furthur needs playing with cams and ports.
Even in standardish trim My 2.8 bighorn which is standard except a 2.5 inch exhaust and 14psi boost will go up a local hill faster with its 84kw and 2000kg all up better than my corolla which is 86kw and 1100kg

Many thanks for the reply.
I am mechanically challenged so to speak and am working blind and from 'guesstimations', from what I have learned the 4jx1 can be remapped to over 200bhp as can the TD5, so I am assuming the components are good for that.
The reason that I changed the 4jx1 for the 4jb1 was due to reliability issues with the big engine.
The main worry now is getting the 2.8 back to a power level somehing akin to a standard 3.0 which is 160bhp.

Nothings impossible but those figures in an old style diesel are probably not wise. The 4jx1 and TD5 have modern very high pressure injection systems and computer control that leaves the efficiency of older style engines for dead even if the electronics are a weak point. Really except for the addition of the turbo there is very little separating the design of the 4jb1 from the first ever diesel engine. Its a very good engine but its never going to reliably compete with modern

I see your point.
As it sits with 117.9bhp it's fairly torquey.
There is a local fella says he will optimise the pump, so maybe I'll get that done, push the boost to about 18psi and see what that gives me.

After that, I been toying with the idea of installing an old ZEX nitros controller and seeing if I can run propane through it?

propane will get you there. Run 30 to 50%
