Diesel Conversion - Isuzu MU 4JG2 in a Trooper

Postby Dobbin » Tue Oct 19, 2010 5:51 am

My 1999 Trooper is a 3.1L Turbo diesel conversion - the engine and 5-speed came from
an 1995 Isuzu MU. The 5-speed is stuck in 4L so I'll need to do the repair or swap out for another
5-speed.

What I really need to find out will be what 5-speed to get to replace the one I have now.
Do all 3 liter turbo diesels and 5-speeds have the same bolt pattern? I do not have any way
of getting a MU 5-speed here in the states, but there a plenty of Trooper 5-speeds available.
Right now I'm looking at a 1996 Trooper 5-speed.

(By the way do most people in the forum refer to a 5-speed as a "gear box" or "transmission").

Great forum. Thanks.

That gearbox is ok as long as it came from a 3.1 diesel not 3.2 v6 or 3.1 v6, but the mounts and selector might need changing from your current gearbox. If its the 3.2 v6 you could use the transfer case off it to fix yours. If its the 3.1 v6 thats a chevy part and no chance

There are no 3.1 diesel Troopers in the states so I won't find a gearbox off a diesel.

Here is what came out of the 1994 MU:

Engine: RJC (4JG2)
Trans: RMN (5-speed manual)
VIN: UCS69DW

The gearbox bellhousing can be removed. So I can bolt it on another gerbox.

Any tech guys know anything about the "RMN" type gearbox ?

I've been offered a gearbox (with transfer case) - 'MM5" from an 1998 Rodeo.

Still need some help

I went from a 2004 3.0 engine (4JX1) to a 1995 2.8 engine (4JB1) and used the original 3.0 transmission complete. So I suspect that all diesel gearboxes/transfer boxes use the same bolt pattern. I even kept the original clutch and dual mass flywheel.

hey there, i think that they all share the MUA5 transmission, that is what is behind my 4JB1t that is an import from japan by way of the UK! you are right about the bellhousing- should be able to use the tranny from any other isuzu vehicle like a rodeo or amigo if i am not mistaken. try over on the ITOCUK forum, or even planetisuzoo and bounce this question around. good luck. and really, if its stuck in 4L, just swap the transfer case...right?

RMN is probably a model number but its still a basic MUA.
I would iuse that box as its already mated to the engine. Might save a lot of agony later
