3.1 power increases?

Postby moseswal2 » Wed Oct 27, 2010 4:49 pm

Hi

I'm new to the forum.I recently replaced my 250D with a 3.1 TD.I like it alot it just makes a lot of turbo noise when you put your foot down.

I was wondering if their is anything you can do to increase the power a bit.
It's just curiosity to see if an indirect injection engine can be safley modded. Will the head crack because of the combustion chamber.Whats the power you guys are getting from your modified 3.1's

I have attached some pics of mt previous 250 engine.It's a bit modified.(98kw 360Nm)
I have no interested in doing mods any more but I like to see what others have done and exchange knowledge, experience.

that looks suspiciously like a twin turbo with a front mount intercooler you have there

Yes, sequential turbos. It's a small and big turbo and gives power over a wider range.

I think it's a compound turbo rather than a twin turbo as otherwise the plumbing makes no sense.

Ok guys as you can tell my Bakkie (pick up) is not a 4x4 so I can't contribute to the forum in that way but engine mods definatley.

The bottom turbo is a tinny one so it come in at 1300 rpm but looses boost at 2900 rpm so thats were the big turbo takes over and it just stretches the power band a little more. The engine is hooked up to a 5speed manual gear box and I changed the crown and pinion from a 4.5 to a 3.7 so it will do 200km/h 124m/h.It's got a front mount intercooler and a 87mm 3.4in free flow exhaust.
Compression is 19.5:1 and it has mechanical injection. It's not dropped in this pic but it has a 60mm drop and 19in x 255 tyres so it handles really good.

It's fun to dive, you just point to were you wane go and it blasts away.I like the look on people faces when they see they are being over taken by a diesel bakkie. Most of the time I just drive slow and relaxing because I don't like giving people hypertension on the road.

The beast is still based on the same chassis as our 4wds and 90% is the same. Thats a decent output from a small motor. I can imagine the look in the faces seen from your rear view mirror.
Because a lot of us have gone the other way with lifts instead of drops high speeds are not a priority but you have roads and policing that is more suited to high speeds. (we have lots of corners and a policeman around every one) My bighorn will pull 160k but needs a double lane road to do it It tends to wander at speed. Would never want to hit the brakes at that speed. It rarely gets over the 100k speed limit for that reason.
Not sure you will get that performance from a 3.1. It has stump pulling torque but is not a high reving motor. Keep it cool tyhough and it shouldnt break
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

it goes to185 then struggles to 200 but thats still 200.You are right Geeves it's basically the same with a few improvements like steering.I've got a cover underneath to stop air playing around in the chassis and alot of trial and errer went into matching the wheel size and diff ratio to get the perfect compramize between grip and acceleration.

I like the 3.1 it feels like it has potential and the exhaust sound is brutal But quiet when you drive normally.I have read on the forum about cracked heads and stuff but can you up the kw's without compramizing the head.
