4jg2t problems

Postby dryalls » Tue Dec 07, 2010 9:52 pm

Hey guys,

I recently bought a 93 bighorn with a 4jg2t engine (has 220,000 kms, supposidly recond at 160,000kms but yet to confirm) that had been overheated and blown the turbo cooling hose off, but not seized, it had a suspected blown headgasket which i have yet to confirm.

First thing i noticed was the radiator was clogged so have had that dealt to, guy at the shop said it was 80% blocked so theres why it overheated(hopfully).

now it seems to be lacking in top end power, doesnt hold revs or speed on hills like it should.
makes a dry whining sound around 2500rpm and above, Turbo?
when i open the oil cap when engine is running it fumes.

heres the wierdest part when i dont have the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation on top of the intake manifold) vacum diaphams connected no smoke what so ever comes out of the exhaust, when i connect the vacum hoses back up it is rough on acceleration from stationary, blows blue, black and white smoke.

Would anybody like to shed some light on this situation???

I am guessing its more than one problem but unsure.

will be checking compressions this week and will post the results.

any help will be much appriciated

Cheers
Dan

when you disconnect the egr vaccum pipes do you block them or let them suck air?

remove the egr valves and seal the holes. Check this is allowed where you live first.
Some fumes are not uncommon on an isuzu diesel. If they are too bad a catch can will reduce oil use. A compression test will tell the true state of the engine. Its not wise to overheat that engine. It cracks heads and can crack liners
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

yeah was like that when i got it, just wierd that it makes it smoke more.

compressions are as follows:
1-442
2-450
3-450
4-400

theres a problem with number 4 cylinder, i put oil in the cylinder and compression rose to 420 but st this stage i'm thinking valves or cracked head.

head will be coming off and i will report my findings.
