2.8 - 3.1 oil cooler / filter housing swap

Postby gomulletgo » Thu Dec 09, 2010 11:52 am

Hi guys,

I'm about to do a service on my 2.8ITD UBS55 bighorn. Air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, oils etc. What I want to know is should I swap my 2.8 filter housing for the 3.1 low mount style as discussed here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1893&p=14817&hilit=oil+filter+housing#p14817

and here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=967&p=14806&hilit=oil+filter+housing#p14806

and maybe even here: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=401&p=14705&hilit=oil+filter+housing#p14705

I want to fit a 2.5 inch or 3 inch exhaust from the turbo back so I figured, if I need to change to that filter housing shortly should I do it now? Save having to buy two different filters? I have a mate with a junker 3.1 and he'll sell/give me the filter housing set up.

Also in my truck (2.8ITD UBS55 bighorn) does the 3.1 oil filter housing give more room for a big exhaust than the existing setup? From what I remember from looking at my mates 3.1 oil filter housing the oil filter pointed down and away from the block, does this make it easier to damage offroad? Does it make the oil filter easier to change? Cheaper or more expensive filters?

Thanks heaps in advance guys :D

If it's anything like a MU. The standard exhaust won't clear the 3.1 filter housing and the new exhaust won't clear the standard 2.8 filter. So you're stuck doing both at once.

Both 3.1 and 2.8 use the same filter but the 3.1 filter orientation (facing down and towards the back) is MUCH, MUCH easier to change.

Also, remember to get the mounting bolts and studs from the 3.1 filter housing as the 2.8 uses different sizes.

Thanks Michael, although I didn't want to hear they all have to be done at once, I want to service my truck but I don't want to rip into a full exhaust system just yet. How much do you think it will cost to post one of those flanges over? Are the bolt up faces of the turbo exhaust housings and the first part of the exhaust all the same for the different spec's of turbo? VI58, VI74 etc all the same flange? Thanks again :D

Yep. All the same hot side mounting face..

The price differs from time to time.. I think it depends on what sort of mood the people at Aus post are in.. If you pay via my paypal link, the postage is included in the cost.
Paypal saves you a lot in bank fees, as more times than not, bank transfers to overseas incur a $25 charge.
