Thinking caps on - oil filters

Postby bnsil80 » Fri Mar 18, 2011 12:38 am

ok guys, think about this. it was mentioned a few posts back, that we could get a plate made up, that would bolt to the block, where the oil filter and cooler go, run some lines and ditch the big bulky oil filter unit.

the idea died quickly because it was said it will be too hard because of the shapes.

has any one had the unit off recently?

is all those things inside the unit necessary? whats stopping me getting a alloy block machined up, that matches the shape of the block, with the necessary cut outs, and pop some fittings on?

inside the unit there is springs and some other weird stuff? can anyone explain this?

if we can sort this out, i'll get some made up this weekend .

cheers,
roshan

Wouldnt you risk running hotter without the oil cooler?
What would be the purpose of ditching it - to fit a 3" dump pipe or something without going remote oil filter?

I plan to run a external air to air oil cooler, to prevent over heating

yes, to run a 3in exhaust and to make it easier to change the filter.

nothing would stop what you suggested, i spoke to a fabrication company about doing this and they said is is indeed posbbile at around the 200 doller mark to fabricate. having said that i juts bought a relocation/oil cooler kit to suit a nissan sr20 motor through an ebay company and it turns out the threads suit the thread of that long threaded shaft you see running the lenght of the oil cooler and protruding from the top for your oil filter to spin on. so by simply cutting that shaft down a bit and extending the thread this complete relocation and external cooler kit bolts str8 on!
suprisingly easy!
