Time for some ideas on a aftermarket turbo

Postby karism » Sun Aug 28, 2011 11:01 pm

Hallo Guys ( and girls ? )

So the Mu have been loads of fun,and I have gone offroading a few times.

I think it is time for a nice turbo upgrade : Instead of trying to upgrade the factory turbo,I figured I would rather opt for something completely different

I have been working with Turbocalc,as well as the online site Squirrel performance : http://www.squirrelpf.com/turbocalc/

I`am aiming for 150 crank hp , not taking into account the intercooler that is also planned.

The Mu is to stay drive-able ,and must be able to tow heavy loads. I`am NOT looking at building a all out performance engine

According to Turbo calc ,I should be looking at the T3 Ar50 turbo.

This will give 7.6 psi boost at 1600rpm ,and 14.2 as planned from 2000 rpm to 4300.

Looking at the more extreme side of the turbo :

This will give 10psi at 1600 ,and 27.6-29 PSI from 2000 to 4300 with no pressure drop off as would occur with the factory RHF5.

You thoughts please!

Ok,I see you guys are quiet on the topic?

So i have done some more homework on the matter,and have decided what the intercooler will be.

Core measurements are as follows :

Width = 603mm
Height = 443mm
Thickness = 30mm

The intercooler I`am planning will be front mount,and come standard off a 2.4 Diesel Alfa.

Iam putting some money aside,that I can fit it and go from there.

I hope the intake temp will drop nicely ,and get rid of the horrible heat soak I have with the standard Non-intercooled setup

I am interested to see how this works but its pretty much all over my head, with the inceased boost on the extreme measurements you mentioned will you have to do work on the injector pump as well?

Iam planning to go up to 14.7 psi (1 Bar).From the calculations so far,the factory setup wonders off the map very quickly.Part of the plan is to add a Pyrometer (EGT) to tune it properly.Mild smoke is ok,but not too much.Looking 19 to 1 smokless performance

The performance set up on my 3.1 is :- an air to water intercooler, 3" mandrel bent exhaust, running 15lb boost, I had the pump opened 1/2 a turn but found it blow a bit to much smoke when I planted my foot. Have now turned it back by 1/4 of a turn, it's ok but does not have that punch it had before (probably better for the economy though).
From all the tests I have done, couple of times on a dyno, I believe it's running around 120KWs and 380NMs. The turbo I have on it not original and it was replaced with the RHB5 but a reco one, so not sure if something else would make more power. Will be watching your build up with interest.

Thanks for the insight Bruce!I will definately be having a look at your vehicle for some ideas!I was thinking of running a 3" exhaust as well.Iam not so sure a 2.5" is going to cut it. Do you have an EGT gauge fitted?

So,today I got home n little early,and decided to hack off the exhaust next to the transmission.

After taking it off, I went for a quick (LOUD!) test drive.

Goodness,what a nice improvement! The engine revs up allot quicker that it used to with the full exhaust on.

I measured the id of the exhaust,and it came to 1.75" ID ( 44mm) I recon its waaay to small!

So next up,will be a new exhaust system. Iam still deciding what the exact size it,all though I will probably go for a 3". At least it should be 2.5" if I cant have a 3" made

3 inch is best on the 3.1 Mandrell bent if you can afford it. Even 2.5 will be a big improvement

Thanks for the suggestion Geeves!

I made a short video of what it sounds like with a very short ,unmuffled exhaust.

Here it is

I`am saving up to have the exhaust made at the moment .It will be done one of these days
