4JB1 2.8T, Head Mu/Bighorn?

Postby Burko09 » Mon Oct 03, 2011 2:14 am

Hey guys im new here, managed to stuff me motor (4JB1 Turbo) in my MU due to a hole in the water pump hose. Been told it still has done a head gasket but will know more later this week. I have found a re-con head complete with exhaust headers and re-con turbo etc but it is from a bighorn, just asking if anybody knows if i can use this on my motor or if turbo/exhaust headers sit in a different position? Any help much appreciated!

Only ever seen one set of headers for a 4jb1t. They were home made by another member with a Mu. I think a member overseas has also done this as well though. A lot of people refer to standard exhaust manifolds as headers so my guess is that this is what you are getting. Only differance in the bighorn/mu turbo is the position of the intake outlet if the bighorn has the intercooler but this can be rotated. Might be time to do the intercooler mod

Thanks for the reply geeves, and yes i was refering to the standard manifold sorry. Any idea how much is involved with the intercooler mod? Would i have to run a bonnet scoop or could i keep it hidden from the mrs? cheers

it needs cold airflow to work so yes its a waste of time without the scoop

Ok , it might be a mod for later on down the track as apprentice wages mean funds are usually tight. Thanks anyway though

I picked up the intercooler, mounts, bonnet scoop, rubber seal thingy for 120 NZ off trademe, and I have just picked up the proper inlet piping for 30 from the wreckers. I had to rotate my turbo which took a bit of effort but if its a big horn one you probably will not have to, in fact you will have to rotate it back to the standard position probably. The intercooler itself isn't a major mod, but I haven't cut the hole yet ... This is for the 3.1 4j2

i see your in chch, i will ask my wrecker what he would charge for a kit. i say do it, its worth it and if your turbo is already rotated then your just going to be making extra work for ya self to rotate turbo then when you get a intercooler re rotate it back again. they are horrible to rotate in place trust me it took alot of time and swearing

Hey thanks for that , might see if i can fit it in the budget somewhere. Also could anyone recomend a reasonable priced mud tire in 31/10.5/15 size? have read many posts but always varied opinions. would prefer mud to a/t as when i go fishing up the river i like to go to the hard to reach places, any help much appreciated, cheers.

the nang kang mudstar and the buckshot are the same tread pattern from seperate companies, nangkang is cheaper but im my opinion both the mudstar and buck shot arent that great in mud. the bighorn is a great all round tyre and also gives you excellent mileage and a quiet drive. the bighorn is my next tyre of choice once my swampers wear out

kl71 dont tend to wear that well, to get the mileage out of them they need to run 40psi and they are not a cheap option. bighorn bang for buck both mileage and grip

they have replaced the dynapro with the rto3 which i have not heard anything positive about. mate of mine picked up 35 inch bighorns for 349 each so 33's be even cheaper

Well it was worse than we thought, not entirely sure what has happened but the pistons and bores are rather rough looking , think we may just give up on the truck.

edge of pistons are chipped and bore is gouged a bit. got another motor on the way so may put it in if it passes a few checks before hand. also have another head we purchased thinking it was just the head damaged. the motor we are getting is intercooled so will have to put a scoop in bonnet , any idea if it should have a rubber boot of some kind between cooler and bonnet? thanks guys
