New Gearbox

Getting the best performance from your Isuzu, the in's and out's

New Gearbox

Postby Powertruck666 » Tue Oct 18, 2011 2:22 pm

Hey guys been a while since i have been on here had problems logging on for some reason with my username but finally managed to get it sorted.
I've currently had my gearbox out of my 3.1 MU to fix a notchy 2nd and 3rd syncro after pulling the box down and finding 2nd and 3rd gear worn i rang around to see who had some spare parts. I came across a guy up in Auckland that has 4 brand new genuine Isuzu Gearboxes with transfer cases for the 3.1. Apparently they are out of the Fronterra which ran the same 4jg2 engine as the bighorn and i think same running gear from memory. The flange which bolts up to the engine is slightly different but he told me all you have to do is remove the casings and put it into the original one as its a straight swap. All the gear ratio's are the same. So instead of rebuilding mine i decided to buy one of these brand new it arrives on friday so will let you know how i get on. Apparently he has had them for quite a few years so he is selling them at a very good price as they are not big movers anymore.
Just thought i would let you guys know if anyone is looking for a gearbox .

sounds a good deal. Not sure about why a frontera with 3.1 should have a different mounting flange to any other 3.1. As far as Im aware all the Frontera badged Wizards had the 3.2 v6 but also nearly all were autos.

Yea im not to sure as to why the casing is different aswell but from what i can gather this gearbox was also used in other applications so maybe this could explain why the bellhousing is different.
It will be here on Friday so will let you know.

Hey the guy is up in Auckland the name of the company is called Gearboxs international LTD He originally quoted me $1500+gst for a genuine Isuzu 3.1 box but i managed to get him down to $1200+ which i thought was a bloody good price considering its genuine and time you rebuild your one its still seccond hand. I guess it all depends on what you want to spend and if you plan on holding onto the truck. These new boxes come with all new transfer case all you have to do is remove the casing off the new one and put it into your original one as the bellhousing is slightly different on the ones he has. Mine is arriving today so i can let you know how i get on.

Cheers

Hope its not the american 3.1. If it is nothing will work as the american 3.1 is a petrol v6 made by chev

The gearbox arrived today it was still wrapped in the original plastic with isuzu/Vauxhaull over it.
I've removed the front bellhousing as this was different to the Mu/Bighorn one. The other thing i noticed was the new gearbox has a pull type arrangment not a push like the MU. Everything has bolted up fine apart from the bellhousing its identical. I've even counted the teeth on the gears to check ratios and they all seem to be the same. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what the box is out of. Now that i have a genuine Isuzu number i might ring and see if i can see what this gearbox has came out of.

What is the number that you have for this gearbox?
What did you mean by a "pull type arrangement not a push like the Mu"?
