4jb1 turbo engine removal and install in a 92 Mu...

Postby Burko09 » Wed Nov 02, 2011 5:37 pm

Hey guys,

I have ended up with the task of removing the engine and installing another engine in my 92 Mu.

I have heard from a few people that this can be difficult due to having to remove the front diff for some reason, just want to check if there are any guidlines to follow to make this as simple as possible.

Hope to get this done in a few weeks tme.

Any help much appreciated, THANKS!

(ps. i have acess to a car hoist and an engine crane aswell to make the job a bit easier)

You don't need to remove the diff to pull the motor out
I remove the bell-housing bolts and engine mounts then lift the motor abit so i can slide a pipe over the torsion bars and under the gearbox to hold it up then separate the motor from the box

There are people who claim to have removed and re-installed their engines in a Mu without either removing the front diff or removing the gearbox. I recently managed to get a 4JG2 out of a Mu without doing the diff or the gearbox thing (it was a shite of a job) but could not get it back in. I ended up removing the gearbox to re-install the engine. I would, if doing it again, just start off by removing the gearbox first. This is how the workshop manuals also suggest doing it.
Having the hoist definately makes the gearbox/driveshafts removal a lot easier.

you may have to use the flywheel from the 4jb1 and also be a little wary if its an auto but otherwise the only issue is the exhaust has to go round a different oil filter setup so getting the front pipe with new engine is a good idea.
I have both engines in my 2 wagons and still believe the 4jb1 is the better engine

I recently removed an engine from my MU and found it easier if you remove the sump pan, this allows the engine to move forward enough to allow the gearbox to disengage from the engine, take care not to damage the scavenge pipe against the forward diff assy.also its a good idea to take as many photos as you can in the engine bay so as to remember where everything goes like the vacuum hoses,I forgot and I am having a hassle trying to find any reference to the vacuum system.
anyway good luck with it and hope I have been of some help.
