Oil Presure?

Postby ONO2HI » Tue Jun 30, 2009 6:18 pm

Hey guys
Just a question, what kind of oil pressure should the 4JB1 have at cold idle? Hot idle?
4th gear 50kms and full boost?

I have just started using genuine filters and notice a higher oil pressure 7-8 on the gauge until its hot, then sits halfway.

Whats normal?

Cheers in advance

Thats about the same place as mine sits. 8 when cold then drops down to under half way on idle then works up to just over halfway when driving..

Your are being kinder to your vehicle if you allow it warm up first (especially in colder climates) before driving it, as mentioned before it warms up the oil and it is not as thick therefore allowing it flow better/smoothly when pushed hard. If you Oil pressure is lower than half way on idle after a good warm up or drive, best to check the level of the oil, add some or replace it if close to your 5000km oil change.

Hmm I recently Purchased an aftermarket oil pressure guage for my 4J1BT RODEO from what u guys are saying I should see 7-8psi when warm and it should read at "halfway" while driving ?... my guage reads up from 10psi to 100psi should I return it as I have not yet fully installed it then??

factory guage is in kg/cm2
this is multiplied by 14 to get psi. Typical on the bighorn is about 4 cold at all speeds (guage doesnt go to 8) but when warm it will drop to 1.5 at idle but still get 4 by 1500 revs but when realy hot will drop below 1 at idle and be around 2 at 2400.This is still 30psi so ok

From what Geeves said about x14 our factory reading to your PSI, your gauge should be ok to use as it covers the usual useful pressure range that the factory one covers.
I can't remember the highest number that the factory one goes too as it might actually be higher than 100PSI, best to wait until someone comes back with that figure or if geeves says its OK.
If you do use the PSI version you should either mark or make a mental note of factory normals figures to the newer PSI figures

Too much pressure usually is cold oil or over filler, which you would notice the large amounts of blue smoke,.......try not to over fill, its not good.
Too low pressure is well worth investigating, could just be a top up,......but then you need ask why do I need to top up,...is there a leak, using too much oil,...or the right viscosity.

Anyone PLEASE correct me if I am wrong.

Cheers

Some oils start to break down near the 5000km change interval and give low readings. The Repco special was realy bad for this The Dello400 didnt do it at all The Valvolene diesel extra drops a tiny amount towards the end of change life.

Interesting what you say about the repco special. Really great after change- done a couple of thou and the readings have dropped. Was sitting on 4 at idle now slightly below but rises to 4 on acceleration. I'll try another brand next time.

I thought it was BP but that probably changes from time to time due to lower bids

It is amazing who is selling whos stuff these days. A paint company sells the "top end" paint at top dollar, and they sell the same paint to the diy guy for half the price. Probably about 50% of the worlds drive chain is made in the same factory. The same presses make $1200.00 a roll chain and $250.00 a roll!!!
Oh how i miss my mu, the lux is just not the same :(

the raw materials can be different. Add 50c worth of chrome a meter to the chain and you explain the difference in quality between the 2. not the price tho

Hi All

Just stumbled across this thread.

How much oil is too much oil? My Mu smokes quite abit and out of curiosity today I had a look at the dipstick and it cools like its almost 1cm above the dot? Is that way too much? Where should sit, near the top dot or halfway?

Regards
