Altenator belt 4jb1 (non airco)

Postby Arnoud » Sun Jan 22, 2012 10:55 pm

Dear all,

Can someone please tell me the trick on how to get the new alternator belt in place.

I took off the old one because it was worn but I can't get the new one on.

I completely loosened the adjustment screw on the alternator and moved the altenator towards the engine as far as possible but there is not enough length on the belt to get it over the edge of all three of the pulleys.

Is it nomal that these are difficult to fit or should it be easy to do? In current situation it seems like it needs excessive force to get it in place. I hope they did not sell me the wrong one. (I compared the old one with the newly bought, they look similar.)

Thanks in advance,

I find the easiest way is to fit the belt on the crank and alternator first and have the belt on the front of the water pump pulley groove then wind it on buy turning the water pump

Are they the same length?
Hold them next to each other and stretch out to a narrow loop. Should be no more than a couple of mm difference
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Mine was very tight when I changed it aswell,
Had to get someone to try to turn it while i pushed in on with my palms over the water pump.
I think it is just because the angles are so great and the belt is quite short

Thanks for your replies. It was a real struggle to get it in place.

It seems my alternator is not original (??). After loosening the bolt on the adjusting bracket I can move it till it hits some piping on the engine.
Looking at the bracket I still have some space from the slotted hole. The alternator seems just a big too big to able to move it far enough towards the engine.

With the help of a friend I finally managed to get the belt in place by loosening the fan pulley. I put the belt on the pulley first and than (with some force) replaced the pulley.

Cheers,
Arnoud
