In Car Boost Control

Postby Isuzumu1 » Sat Aug 15, 2009 11:21 am

Has anyone fitted one of these? when I have it plumbed in the boost will only show around 7 to 8 psi but I am sure its boosting to around 14 to 15. Wish I knew how to draw a diagram on here to show what I've done. Basicially it has an arrow on the controller and one on the other thing which you have to have going to the actuator, anyway any help would be great.

Cheers Bruce

Which side have you got the gauge on? It needs to be on the crossover pipe/intercooler side, if it is on the actuator side it will only read what is being let through by the boost controller.

If the gauge is showing 7-8psi that’s the boost you have unless the gauge is inaccurate or you have the gauge plumed into the wrong spot.
Take some pictures to show where it’s all plumed into

Hi Yarno, I found that diagram on the net but I am not using the Dawes valve or the vacuum pump.

try clamping the line between the wastegate and controller. You should see a max boost between 14 and 17. Do remember you only get max boost at optimum revs ie 2200 to 3500 and under load at full throttle

OK I have modified the drawing a little to just show a basic setup, as I don't exactly know what controller you have..

Hi pig75. Yes that does help. I just purchased a boost controller kit off trademe like the one pictured below.
Boost_Controller.jpg

So I can set it up as you have pictured it, although below is another install diagram, can anyone please advise which is the best way to install it. Cheers :D

EDIT: Also, the boost controller I bought is advertised as "In cab" should I install it in the cab? Or with as short a pipes as possible in the engine bay? My thinking is shorter pipes would possibly mean less pressure loss, correct? Also thinking in cab would be better for tuning as I can watch the boost and EGT guages while winding up the boost.

There is little or no flow in the control line between the turbo and wastegate so there should be no practical difference between putting the control in the cab or as close as possible except the cost of suitable pipe. However the longer this pipe the slower the response to changes not that it will be more than a second or 2

BUMP, I still haven't installed this. Can someone please advise me what is the best way to install it? As asked in my previous question. Should it be installed as pig75 has shown? Or installed as shown in the picture I posted up?

Thankyou pig75. I have now installed the boost controller as you have said. I have a problem however. Before installing the boost controller boost would top out at close to 11psi. Now that I have installed the boost controller boost tops out at 12-13psi, regardless of if I have the boost on the boost controller wound right up or right down. What am I doing wrong? Is the overboost protection valve coming into play and not allowing me to boost any higher? Thanks in advance :)

Thanks pig75, I opened it up and as you can see it's not set up the same as your picture, the ball and spring are on the opposite side of the housing or the sticker is on the wrong way. Also the ball goes in the housing first and then the spring, the opposite to your diagram. Should I just go about trying to build mine the same as your diagram? Or should I put the ball in the housing first as in my pictures and just assume the sticker is on the wrong way and install it with the arrow facing away from the wastegate actuator?

It looks correct just different
As the turbo makes boost it pushes the ball open and allows boost to the gate. The other part of the controller bleeds boost pressure so the gate thinks it has standard boost
Check that the bleed tap is working. You should be able to blow through it
If all that seems to be working try running the motor with the gate disconnected and See if it makes more than 12-13psi boost If it doesn't it will be the over boost valve
Where is your boost gauge plumbed into?

Thanks pig75.

I could blow through the bleed tap, as I wound the boost pressure down on it it got harder to blow through.

I took it for a run with the pipe off between the turbo and wastegate actuator, The boost only got to about 10 and I could here a squeal under the bonnet, I figured I was loosing boost pressure from the turbo so I blocked up the hose with a screwdriver as shown in the picture below. Once this was done boost pressure topped out at 13psi.

PICT0074 @30 EDIT.JPG

Here is a picture of where my boost guage is plumbed into (intercooler to fuel pump line)

PICT0072 @30 EDIT.JPG

So from what you have said you think the problem is the overboost protection valve, Is this a picture of it below, should I plate it off and block the hose feeding into the air intake from it?

PICT0071@30 EDIT.JPG

Thanks again :D

I would make a gasket out of tin or aluminum to go between the manifold and valve so it blocks it off
