air cleaner on 2.5

Postby wbski007 » Wed Oct 21, 2009 5:59 am

Here's a photo of where I have my air duct and cleaner, is there any better place I could have it to get the optimum amount of air without having to worry about rain water getting in? Wayne

as good as any although a snorkle would allow colder air. If you used off road though I wouldnt recomend.

I agree with geeves there, there just is not many other places you can put it.
Even if you don't go off road, a snorkel is worth looking at, it gives the motor much better air, and you can fit a pre-cleaner to the top if your going into really dusty conditions.

Still need an aircleaner but it will get dirty slower. The colder air from a snorkle will allow a little more power but on its own not enough to justify the cost. If you drive gravel roads haveing the intake above the dust cloud is worthwhile but if you never go off the black top why bother

Always need an air cleaner of some sort, a pre-cleaner just takes out all the big stuff before the air gets to the main air cleaner. As geeves said, if you never go off road, what you've got is probably as good as anything.

I,ve changed a few things around reguarding the air cleaner placement and the intercooler, first of all I removed the intercooler and placed the air cleaner intake under bonnet scoop where the intercooler was, with no apparent loss in power  ,go figure, but regained 3 more pounds of boost which I think compensated for the loss of the intercooler?? Any how I have a lot less cluttered engine compartment and it has plenty of power, I did notice however that I wasn't blowing as much black smoke under full throttle as before, the only thing I could figure out was the increase in boost took away the smoke, so I gave the ole pump another full turn and gained even more power and the black smoke returned under full power, :o yippie kii yeah :D :D :D my pyrometer, before the changes was running at 800 degrees F under full load pulling my camper uphill, foot in it all the way, now same hill, same amount of smoke, foot sill in it 900 degrees F and seams to have a little more power, anyway I'm very happy with the way its running and I still got 22 MPG pulling my camper.

900 is getting a bit on the hot side. I would be backing the fuel of a little before a head or turbo goes. Online converter to Celsius gives 482.2222222C

I drove big trucks for years with big cummins and cat motors, they were my own rigs and I would turn up the fuel on all of them, but always ran a pyrometer and was told I could go up to 1000 degrees with no problem, which I've done many times pulling 8% grades with 80,000 lbs, when you get up to 1100 f then your starting to push the limit a little, alumium doesn't start to melt until 1300 degrees F so 900 F should be no problem in my little motor for short periods. :D
Cheers Wayne
