3.1 Rebuild

Postby Powertruck95 » Wed Jun 24, 2015 7:21 am

Hey guys been ages since I have been on here have had so many problems trying to log in on my old username Powertruck31T so i have now made a new account.
I've still got my 3.1 Mu which I'm selling now. I've now got a 3.1 swb Bighorn which I've just built a new motor for. I'll be putting all my turbo setup and W2A intercooler into the Bighorn. The new motor is a 97 4JG2 which I've rebuilt from scratch, has new genuine liners and pistons, all new bearings. It has the later model head which has the 42mm valves. I've also done some minor work to the cam which has given me an extra 40 thou lift on the exhaust which should help increase bottom end torque even more. I dynoed my Mu just before i started the rebuild so i have a baseline figure of what it was doing so when the new motor is done and run in I'll re-dyno it again.
Just trying to figure out how to down size the files so i can attach them can anyone help?

Ive just sent a reactivation for 31t Hopefully you are still a snail at extra. There are 5 other powertrucks as well. Do you want me to reactivate all of them?
Best tool Ive used for shrinking pictures is Irfanview. Its free easy to use and google will take you straight to it

Hi Geeves thanks for that I've had so many problems logging in on the old account I decided to start another one. Don't worry about activating the other ones. Will try and downsize these photos so I can load them up.

The build has taken me around 12 months ive just slowly been gathering the parts have been in no big hurry. Cost wise i would say around $3500-4k that's using mostly genuine parts. Its all the small things that seem to add up injectors pump etc

New turbo setup with the upgraded billet compressor wheel. Its basically the same turbo on my old setup just with a more efficient compressor wheel

Photos probably make it look bigger than what it is :P. It was on full boost 15psi on my old motor by 1600rpm held a flat boost curve right out to redline. May need to upgrade the pump next to a 12mm head will wait and see how it goes.

What are the sizings on both housings? Is it hybrid or a custom build by a turbo wizard?

It's a custom built turbo that I have done. Runs the 12R housing with a VF8 turbine wheel machined into it and a 6 blade billet compressor wheel.

Great work mate. Looks fantastic.
Have you had it back on the dyno after a bit of run in time?

Re: 3.1 Rebuild

Hey guys been awhile since I have been on here. Well I have put down around 8k on the new motor all is going well so far. I ran it on the dyno a few weeks ago to get a comparison to my old setup and its currently making 101kw at the wheels with 455nm on 14psi. EGT's are still very safe 580deg pre turbine. What was interesting to see was torque was up all round and seems to hold it out much longer. We ran a AFR up the back to see how the mixture was looking and it will dip into the 15's momentarily off boost but as soon as boost picks up its running around 22-23 AFR ratios which is pretty safe. I have noticed that the fuel pump seems to be struggling to keep enough fuel up as the AFR leans off even more with RPM. I have just had a 12mm pump built using a Toyota 14B head and 4jb1 camplate so we are going to have another play. We are hoping that the bigger head with the more aggressive cam lobe is going to increase the rate of injection which will introduce more fuel quicker which im hoping will help spool the turbo even better. Time will well. So far I'm pretty happy with the setup. If I can make around 115-120kw on 17-18psi max I've achieved what I wanted to do. These engines seem to handle everything I have thrown at them so far so I have no doubt that they are strong enough.

Sounds good mate. Good afr up top. Sounds like with more fuel and increase in boost to match you will see the
numbers ya looking for. When you get the new pump in and tune to 20-1 or 21-1 the rwkw will climb safety
