Bighorn 4JX1 214kms UBS73
Back in Nov 2015 when I was driving on the motorway towards town I noticed that my temperature gauge was acting funny.. when I finally reached the city and stopped at the lights the heat started to climb rapidly. I panicked and took off to a mates place who told me not to drive the Bighorn again.
I got her towed to a diesel specialist who told me there was diesel in the radiator, oil contaminating the wiring loom and possibly water in my diesel tank. His guess was a blown O Ring in the Injectors.
The overheating was a worry, but the oil is clean and no smoke blowing out the exhaust is apparently a good sign for the head. I am not sure what caused the overheating of my bighorn but I had been having problems since my last oil change.
The bighorn last had a service in Sept 2015 (5000k before overheating) where the I was told by the mechanic there was a range of oils I could use. I insisted to the mechanic that I was told not to put any other oil in the Bighorn other than 5w40. The mechanic rang his headquarters and they said Fuchs Titan Truckplus SAE15w40 (is this a fully synthetic oil?) would be fine and can go into any diesel engine. I took his professional word and let him start the job.
He also put 8 litres of oil in when it's meant to take around 7.. please correct me if I am wrong here.
The next day the Bighorn took ages to start and ran like a dog for the first km in the morning. I continued to use my truck as I had taken the word of my mechanic and put up with the slow warm ups a splutty flat accelaration for the first few kms until I had a nice warm engine.
Before I took in my Bighorn to the service she was running better than well. 8 turns before she started... but when she started she had full power. I was suspecting glow plugs needing replacing at some stage in the future but they still had enough life for the time. The engine itself ran like a dream.
After the service I had another engine all together.. slow to start and sluggish to drive.
Has anyone else had similar issues with oil changes (incorrect oil) and do you think not having the correct oil can create incorrect heating problems or possibly parts in the motor to give way before their time is due?
