Diesel in Radiator

Bighorn 4JX1 214kms UBS73

Back in Nov 2015 when I was driving on the motorway towards town I noticed that my temperature gauge was acting funny.. when I finally reached the city and stopped at the lights the heat started to climb rapidly. I panicked and took off to a mates place who told me not to drive the Bighorn again.

I got her towed to a diesel specialist who told me there was diesel in the radiator, oil contaminating the wiring loom and possibly water in my diesel tank. His guess was a blown O Ring in the Injectors.

The overheating was a worry, but the oil is clean and no smoke blowing out the exhaust is apparently a good sign for the head. I am not sure what caused the overheating of my bighorn but I had been having problems since my last oil change.

The bighorn last had a service in Sept 2015 (5000k before overheating) where the I was told by the mechanic there was a range of oils I could use. I insisted to the mechanic that I was told not to put any other oil in the Bighorn other than 5w40. The mechanic rang his headquarters and they said Fuchs Titan Truckplus SAE15w40 (is this a fully synthetic oil?) would be fine and can go into any diesel engine. I took his professional word and let him start the job.

He also put 8 litres of oil in when it's meant to take around 7.. please correct me if I am wrong here.

The next day the Bighorn took ages to start and ran like a dog for the first km in the morning. I continued to use my truck as I had taken the word of my mechanic and put up with the slow warm ups a splutty flat accelaration for the first few kms until I had a nice warm engine.

Before I took in my Bighorn to the service she was running better than well. 8 turns before she started... but when she started she had full power. I was suspecting glow plugs needing replacing at some stage in the future but they still had enough life for the time. The engine itself ran like a dream.

After the service I had another engine all together.. slow to start and sluggish to drive.

Has anyone else had similar issues with oil changes (incorrect oil) and do you think not having the correct oil can create incorrect heating problems or possibly parts in the motor to give way before their time is due?

3 major faults with your engine
First and cheapest that oil is no good This statement is not completely true. If you lived in the tropics it would of been perfectly fine but Wellington you were correct to demand thinner oil. Unfortunately this is the least of your problems
Second diesel in oil or radiator is 0 ring failure in the injectors. This should of been addressed as a recall but a holden dealer or diesel specialist should be able to fix. Not cheap though
Third the oily loom is a faulty sensor. If your lucky the oil hasnt got to the ecu and its a cheap loom to replace (compared to the ecu)

I read somewhere that the UDS73 model was the engine Isuzu made which did not require the recall. Also the fault in with the injectors started showing signs around 50,000kms. You were lucky to make it to 100,000. ??
Yes I think you are right about the O Rings.
I have had a few mechanics telling me incorrect oil would cause this particular model engine to fail after a few months of driving. Also this engine is not alone. Other fussy engines are out there which fail/die without the correct grade oil.
What pushes the oil up into the loom? Could over filling cause this or is it a fault which occurs with failed O Rings?

Robs the closest thing we have to an expert but the sensor in question leaks through the inside of the sensor. I think its one of the oil pressure sensors. Ive seen standard oil pressure sensors leak in the past but they only make a mess.
I have wondered about cutting a loom and putting a plug and socket on it positioned to prevent the oil going past it into the computer.
The oil issue is more complex. These engines only need the thin oil. Some of the modern diesels with particuate filters need oils with special additives. I dont know why an engine that isnt burning any oil can have its oil damage the filter in the exhaust.

Yes sounds like the o rings around the injector sleeves have gone, or the head is corroded around the base of the sleeves another common issue, all the 4jx1 engines suffer from it, 5w/30 is all i have ever used in them and change both oil filters every service, the oil goes down the copper wire from the injectors, oil pressure sensor and into the ecu, i have herd of this but have never seen one, you can buy new looms from holden dealers

so I'm taking the 4jx1 to my local holden dealer to get new injector sleeves and loom kits put in, radiator flushed and oil replaced with 5w30.

The Holden dealer reckons $30 for the 5w30 refill. I'm impressed with that price but does quality/price matter?

Am I about to face more issues... who knows. No sign of head cracking but after sleeves are replaced I will know for sure.

4jx1s only tend to crack heads if neglected. Its fair to say dont buy any engine that has a rusty radiator. Depending on how bad the contamination was they can score bores and run bearings but this should be obvious before any work done

This engine was properly serviced and ran beautifully until the last mechanic put 15w40 in.

$30 for the lot.. 7.5 litres. That sounds wrong to me. I am going to requestion them.

I got the 4jx1 back from HMC today. The mechanic put a newer brand oil in which he says he runs through his late model diesels. It's a 5w40. It's starting first pop unlike before.

also flushed diesel from radiator, flushed water from diesel tank and lines, replaced injector sleeves with full sleeve replacement kit and replaced loom with full loom kit.

Yes water had reveresed it's way back into the diesel tank.. most people experience water and diesel coming out the water overflow.

She's running like a dream now. For how long... I'm not sure, but HMC are doing the servicing as long she's running this well.

7.5 litres of oil cost $176.00. Not cheap!

it's Havoline Fully Syn 5w40 Dexos 2 Low SAPS. Pretty sure I'm meant to have 5w30 tho. My oil light came on and stayed on for over 5mins until I rollded forward a few metres and it went off. Is this oil to heavy?

On the worksheet they have provided me it also says my car is a 3.1DT. which it's not.. It's a 3.0TD.

Get then to change oil again?

thats fine as oil except the price tag
They make full synthetics in 5w40 but not semi synthetics and mineral oils. The reasons are the additives but to explain further would take a year of study on google. It is rocket science

Thanks! I will do more research on prices. And I've found a few mechanics around the area who know more about 4JX1's.
