How long would a timing belt last

Postby crayfish66 » Sat Nov 26, 2016 1:47 pm

I'm going past 301,000 kms on my 97 3.1l . Cambelt was due at 288,000kms but haven't done it as this was my interim truck until I could find something cooler. Am I iving on borrowed time? Hesitant to put any more money into it as it isn't worth anything now & spent $1600 on bliddy rear wheel bearings this year (ABS collar issues don't get me started...)
I use it everyday as a work vehicle doing aprox 600kms a week. Has anyone had a belt break?

A few people have and at best its bent push rods but more likely include bent valves which means head off or if you are unlucky damaged pistons.
A belt kit is just over $100 and 2 to 3 hours labour to fit
Belts should be done every 100000km or 6 years
You can loosen the top part of the cover to inspect the belt but I had a mechanic do the same for me and was told the belt was fine. A year later I did the belt and the steel reinforcing was poking through all the teeth
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
