Intetrcooling a 4JB1T

Postby magicdeo » Thu Feb 23, 2017 12:16 pm

Gday fellas. I am going to fit a intercooler to my 2.8 rodeo next week. My question is, will i see much gain from an intercooler or will it need to be tuned afterwards? I have a 2.5" exhaust already and after a recent trip loaded up I am just looking for that little extra torque. Reliability is more important to me than power so I am not trying to turn her into a ferrari, just wondering whether an intercooler alone will be enough? Cheers

no performance gain from what I've been told. mostly its about looks. but my personal opinion it is a larger area for boost to build.

There is a small gain. Worth it in my opinion.

I didnt notice anything with the intercooler, nor did I notice anything increasing the boost... tweaking the fuel pump, thats where the gains are noticed. Its all a step by step process from what I have learnt - Ive got a well powered 4jb1T and the last tweak was advancing the timing. This gave good results also, appears to use less fuel, runs cooler and has more power. Love it!
Mind you, if you get all the foundations sorted at the start it should be able to hammer the 3.1L trucks once finished tweaking!
There is a mental amount of information on this website for your engine, everything you need to know about tweaking the 4jb1t is just a search away.
So feel free asking questions or just look for the last thread on the same topic.

Hi, Guys. Can anyone tell me if its possible to change a non-turbo 4JB1 to a turbo 4JB1? And also what I would need to do so

bolt the turbo on the side. I dont think there are any internal differences between turbo and non turbo versions.
Also fuel pump from a turbo model

I think Geeves meant to say Injector Pump.

To go to a turbo charged engine you will need a Distibutor Fuel Injection Pump with a boost compensator (Manifold Pressure Compensator).

Ok, Thanks. But what if I don't have the specific turbo parts from a standard 4JB1-T, can I use the one from a 4JG1-T?

Just bolt exhaust manifold and turbo on run oil and water lines, can fit intake manifold but dont have to, run standard injector pump with the fuel scew wound in will give you alot more power and be fine

Thanks man... I hope the pistons can take it or I will have to buy new turbo ones or if the ones from the JG1-T can work

Hi mate, hope you got your intercooler fitted ok. I have a TF 1995 model, 4JB1T. I fitted a 550 x 250 x 65 mm frount mount intercooler on mine, fabricated the hot side pipe from turbo from 1 3/4 inch mild steel and had to clock the turbo around so the outlet faced downwards. The cool side pipe was 2.25 inch with mandrel bends. Chopped holes in the front either side of the air con condenser to get them through, it fits beautifully. Have cut hole out of the roobar and fitted sheetmetal shroud to ensure maximum flow through it. Also I moved the battery from the turbo side over to the other side, so now the turbo gets its air from a cold air duct straight to it, instead of going over the motor like before and getting heated up. I fould the performance increase substantial, very substantial. I have changed the tension on the star wheel in the pump so that fuel goes in a little earlier, and the max fuel screw is one and a half turns in for more max throttle fuel.
