4jg2 to 4jx1 conversion

Postby 1madkiwi » Fri Sep 08, 2017 7:39 pm

Hi All

looking at converting a blown 4jg2 (1995) to a 4jx1 (1999) motor from a donor bighorn vehicle.

The donor vehicle is a auto and the other is a manual.

couple of questions that I need to ask is:
Would the 4JX1 bolt straight up to the older manual gearbox.
I know to bolt on the old pump but is there anything else I should consider?

Cheers

The engines are too different to do a straight swap. Only way to do this is to swap engine and trans together along with the wiring loom ecus etc. Might be cheaper and easier to fix the doner vehicle.
The 4jx1 does not have a great reputation for reliability I would abandon this idea and look for an even later 4jj1 which still has a few conversion issues but is a very good engine

Awesome. Cheers guys.
It was gonna be one of the cheaper options we where looking at as we could get hold of a cheap bighorn.
Was more curious of if the manual would bolt strait on or minor mods to the bolt holes.

4jx1 and 4jg2 do not share the same bellhousing. Also the auto uses a torque converter the other a flywheel but the end of the crank is different. The real issue is still the wiring though. 4jg2 is a relatively simple engine Hook up 3 wires and it will run. Not so the 4jx1 you need about 50 wires

Thanks Geeves. That has cleared that up. Wasn't much info on the net of what fitted and what doesn't.
