Kinugawa TD04 RHF5 replacement

Postby paulthepilot5 » Tue Sep 11, 2018 8:28 pm

Has anybody had any experience with Kinugawa TD04 turbos, after some ideas on performance compared to the IHI rhf5.
Cheers

So I took a chance ended up getting a Kinugawa TD04H with the same housing flanges and the rhf5. Have to say the performance increase is great
The ihi turbo was good and performed better than I expected and got me to 125rwkw but boost would peak at 24-25psi and would drop off above 3000rpm.
In comparison the TD04H will produce 28psi and at an earlier rpm, this is maintained al the way to 4000rpm. This has significantly improved afr on my setup which is pretty much a maxed out stock pump. Have not yet gone on the dyno with it but performance increase driving is significant will lower egt’s

Cheers Paul

Is this on the 4jb1t? Sounds like the new turbo works heaps better. I’m running 18psi currently on the stock turbo / pump and find after 3000 the boost starts to die off. Did you have similar results? Inter cooler?

Yes on a 4JB1-t. I ended up getting 24psi (without water meth) out of stock turbo, that was with intercooler, improved manifold, induction and exhaust pipework. Mine too would drop off over 3000rpm. The TD04 at the moment is gated at around 27-28psi. It will hold that all the way up to 4000rpm.

This is because the compressor (intake wheel) is too small and is going into what is called choke. Meaning the engine needs more air than the compressor can produce. Installing a 39-41mm wheel would fix it.

Would it really be worth changing the compressor wheel size on the stock turbo? Would require the compressor housing to be machined to match new wheel and then a balance

Yes to both, and neither are a big deal to do. You would be suprised how “loose” turbos are balanced from the factory, but when the name of the game is to pump out thousands of turbos a day, its impractical to get a perfect balance. I balance mine until the machine isnt able to properly detect an imbalance. Heres a comparison of a vnt turbo for a vm 2.8, stock turbo on the right is 39.5mm, mine on the left is 42mm.

I also upgrade all the internal parts to newer generation ones, and they out perform the old ones by a wide margin. For the 4jb’s a simple wheel change would wake these engines up.
