Sealing EGR blank

Postby blairtron » Sun Nov 18, 2018 2:32 pm

Hi guys,

Long story short I blanked off my EGR holes a while ago and the blank on the exhaust manifold port was never quite 100%. Sealant failing, bolts snapping (that's more my fault than anything) etc. I have a replacement used manifold that I'm going to swap in and I'm intending to blank off the port using the original EGR pipe fitting cut down to its base and welded closed. My question is what should I be using as a gasket? I've tried using CRC 340 red but that didn't work terribly well as it would burn through during periods of sustained load ie hills. The original metal gasket wasn't effective either as it was a bit chewed up from me f**king the bolt holes in the original manifold.

4JG2.

Help appreciated.

Hi, I've had many experiences with that now. The best I've found is using a good thick metal plate like 5 or 6mm thick and use RVT copper sealant with some healthy bolts torqued to 30ft. If you use to thin of a blank it bends allowing gasket sealant to breach.

Yes, its good for high temp but will not hold pressure if theres a gap.

For my 4jh1, I cut thin blanking plates from a steel olive oil can and used with the original metal gasket sandwiched under the original EGR pipe at each end, leaving the EGR looking intact, no sealant, no bending, no probs. I reckon the thin plate from the oil can being relatively soft and flexible makes a good seal and, would seal even without the metal gasket.
