4JG2 water pump replacement

Postby Stuck » Mon Nov 26, 2018 5:41 pm

Hi,

I have a 1996 3.1 turbo diesel bighorn. I believe this means the engine is a 4JG2.

The timing belt needs replacing so I've had a few quotes to change it from different garages. A few places said to replace the water pump at the same time as its driven off the timing belt. Another place said that the water pump is driven off its own separate belt and so doesn't necessarily need replacement.

I'd like to know which place is right so I've been looking for a diagram of the water pump drive belt arrangement but cant find anything. Please could someone tell me if its driven from the timing belt or its own belt?

Thanks very much.

The water pump is NOT driven off of the timing belt. It is however a good time to replace it when doing the timing belt. They are not very expensive.

Not driven off the timing belt but the pump is behind the timing cover. Silly not to do it unless you know its new

Sorry to thread jump/jack.
On the 4JG2, the water pump is driven off of it's own belt and it's not behind any covers.....at least on mine this is the case.

can't be. I think you're thinking the power steering pump is the water pump?

Yes but have a look where all the water pump bolts are. I think you can change it without removing the timing belt but the cover has to come off

geeves is right you still have to remove the plastic timing cover to change the water pump.
