Getting the best performance from your Isuzu, the in's and out's

1996 Trooper

Postby jambo1996 » Wed Mar 13, 2019 1:58 am

I just bought a 1996 Isuzu trooper with the 6 cyl. I am new to this forum as this is my first Isuzu. My trooper is very clean and is fully loaded with all options. 135,000 miles. My question is, The engine seems to run strong but it has a small tapping sound when i first start it, as it warms up it seems to go away. I dont think its a rod knock.
Its not loud but i'm hoping someone might know. Never driving or knowing the Isuzu before. A friend said Isuzu are a little different than other vechicles and it might be normal. Should i run a thicker oil? or ??? Also my ABS light stays on, I had the brakes checked and there in perfect shape. He said when the ABS system is connected the brakes make a shuttering feeling when hitting the brakes but with the ABS off the brakes feel good. It does feel like manual brakes with the ABS dissconnected.
I want to make this trooper run like new before i start to put mods on it. I would like feed back from anyone that has the 96-97 trooper with 6cyl please. also any suggestions on making my trooper a better version. engine proformance and or just making it a really good trooper on and off road. thanks

First is this the 3.2 or 3.5 litre engine? They have hydrolic tappets so it might be one of them sticking. Change the oil and that might fix it. Otherwise its probably ok.

Reliable enough but sticky tappets can happen if its not looked after. They perform well enough but 4wds should never be treated as rocket ships
