bad brakes

Postby ethisuzubighorn » Wed Oct 07, 2020 6:13 pm

Hey guys. so I have a problem with my brakes on my 1993 bighorn 3.1 auto. the brakes aren't the best so I put new pads in with little improvement. if I stand on the brakes the pedal just goes quite stiff? and if I pump the brakes while slowing down the brakes almost become nonexistent? any help would be much appreciated!

also wasn't sure where to post this sorry

Probably should of been in faults but no worries. Pedal goes hard. Does the brake light come on on the dash? This could indicate a vacuum leak. Tracing it can be fun and time consuming but it will be easy to fix. Next check all calipers to make sure the pins move freely on the mounts. One is on the bolt the other is a sleeve. Also check the pistons are not seized.

This is a common issue if a aftermarket alternator is used, the vaccum pumps seem to be alot smaller also make sure the brake booster isn't leaking

so I had a quick look and could hear a hissing noise so I found where it was coming from and it's a little box to the left side of the brake booster it has to air lines going into the top and a blue plug on the side. anyone know what its called. I have a picture but am unsure how to upload it lol

They are solinoids. Not sure what each one does but most are optional. If its a split hose repair or replace it if its an open hole on the solinoid and no other pipes plug it

so my brakes fully stopped working so I bleed the brakes and there was heaps of air bubbles. now the brakes work a lot better then they ever have lol. but they are still a little bit firm and when I first start the engine the hand brake light stays on for 5 to 10 seconds?

you have a vac leak somewhere. On my wizard fitting a non return valve in the vac line to the booster helped a lot but try and find/fix the leak first
