oil catch can?

Postby cyberbeej » Thu Feb 25, 2010 8:57 am

Can someone explain the benefits of fitting one of these cans?

as far as i can understand, if your getting oil blown through the intake from the breathers, then you have excess back pressure caused from something(rings etc)

so where is the benefit if fitting a can? is it that it weakens the fuel/air mixture?

Is this also the case for blanking off the egr valves and feed back pipe from exhaust?

oil catch can seperates the oil from the vapour, so the can catches the oil and only vapour gets thru the breather back into the intake, that way dont burn as much oil

The isuzu engine is known for a high amount of crankcase fumes even if compression etc is within spec. Also the design of the breather doesnt readily stop oil getting blown into the intake. The catch can just catches the oil and redirects it back to the sump. It is not necessary on all engines but can help reduce fairly bad oil consumption. I have heard of one engine that was useing 2 liters per 1000 km before fitting and none after. It does nothing to restore compression if the engine is truely tired. I dont use one but I dont burn oil either.
Diesel engines dont have a fuel mixture as such
EGR is a different issue. EGR re-injects exhaust into the combustion chamber to reduce the flame temperature reducing nitrous oxide. It does reduce engine power slightly and the jury is out on whether it affects economy. I think your local rules will prevent you altering this system

when fitting the catch can do you block off the inlet and air intake (the two otehr than the rocker cover) and if not any reasons?

You should put the can in between the rocker cover line and over boost valve

Hi thanks, i've had a look and my moter sounds different.
It had the pipe of the rocker cover going to a T piece and then one pipe off there going to the inlet ( other side of where the EGR diaphrams bolt on and then the other going to the plastic pipe along from the air cleaner box.
It is a 2.8 TD in a 91 Bighorn.

14 inch body lift then fit sideways above the driveshaft.
