Suspension Lift Bighorn 1995

Postby FORGE1 » Thu Jun 23, 2011 8:38 pm

Hey everyone,

After doing some thinking and work on my bighorn I need to do a left to save my tyres as they rub quite bad at full flex.

I was wanting to know what kind of lift people have as I need to find something thats cheap but effective and wont sag after a couple of outing.

I have heard of people using Maxi Trax (From Repco) what are they like?

Im going to replace my shocks when the funds become available as they are pretty worn (really soft, even on hard).

Any help would be great.

Cheers
Ray

Shocks won't help lift.

Cheapest way to get lift is use coil spacers as long as your coils are not sagged.

You can use standard Patrol coils if someone is upgrading their Patrol.

Body lift is also option.

body lift will lift rub points away from tires, 125 - 250 for spacers and longer bolts

I have the Max Trax coills (50mm lift), had them for 4+ years and they are great, when we put gthem in the bighorn got real tall as the old ones were pretty sad. As far as fex goes I found the Max Trax ones just as good as tghe factory A supension lift upto 50mm dose not to be certed but any body lift will need a cert. With the lift in mine I run 33x12.5 with out any problems

Sweet thanks for the replies everyone, I will pay BNT and Repco a visit over the next couple of days to work out prices.
I have tried the Safari springs in the back but it didnt make any difference to the height of mine so I think they might have been sagged as well so will see if I can find some more. I have LWB Bighorn one in there at the moment and they keep some height under there but they are slowly sagging. There is a guy with a 2 door 3.1 TDI bighorn locally and his is really high so might talk to him next time I see him.
Yeah I know shocks wont help a lift but they are pretty bad with how soft they are so probably wont get a wof with them.

Haha I will give you my old worn out ones once Im finished I will even repaint them to make them look new lol

Has anyone ever used Cobra Springs? I have been quoted $245inc for Heavy Duty Raised springs which will give a 50mm lift to a LWB so as mine is a SWB it should be a bit more

other options were:
$290inc for Maxi trac which is only a Heavy Duty so unsure of the height I will get out of it but probably a 50mm
or $280 for Dobi 40mm lift

from what i have been told you want a progressive lifted spring ...First section of the coil is for load bearing then the next part of the spring handles the bumps and dips on road at road speeds and then the last is the over flex...IE compression and rebound when 4x4ing.
My mate got some for his safari and has run them for about 6 yrs of hard 4x4ing and they are still tip top condition..they were 3inch lifted

I managed to get some new springs (cobra) through someone on offroadexpress.co.nz for $215 to my door. So I will try them out and let everyone know.

Re shocks: I have normally used standard shocks for a 50mm lift so yes you can use the factory shocks I think you loose downward flex as they max out quicker but otherwise your all good. Its just I got some Rancho 9000's for a cheap price so I still get the max out of my flex.

Hi,
How are the Cobra springs now?
Have they sagged at all?
I'm looking at putting new leaf springs on the back of my truck & was wanting to know if the Cobra's were any good.
Cheers

Hey mate,

They are doing really well. They havent sagged at all. I thought they did at 1 stage but it was becasue I put non flared guards on the front, as when I swapped the flared ones back on it was even again.

Really good value for $$ I would reccomend them to anyone with a Bighorn. I have a set of Poly air bags that Im going to put in the back for when I need to tow heavy things like cars etc but I havent needed them so far as it doesnt drop the back much at all.

Thanks for that info!
Good to know that they won't drop much.

One other thing, where did you get your springs from for that price (think you put on here about ~$250)?

I have phoned up Repco ($1100), Mag & Turbo ($695), but haven't tried the place that manufactures them (Chamberlain Auto Springs) yet, although i think they will be about $400.
