Rear shackle bushes

Postby Smiley » Tue Sep 20, 2011 6:13 pm

Tryed removing my old shackles to install new longer ones but the old ones dont want to budge, can get the nuts off and the plate off one side (bolts are welded to other side) but rest wont budge assuming the bushes are preventing it, tryed CRC and lots of it but no go, is there a trick to getting them out and is there a certain angle i should have it jacked up on for removal?

Any help appreciated
Cheers

They wont come out if there is any load on the shackle.
First jack up normaly and remove the wheel. Place a jackstand under the chassis and lower so the disc is just off the ground.
Then jack the axle up slowly till there is no weight on the spring ie the spring is not holding any vehicle weight or diff weight. Then the shackle should slide straight out and then lower the jack so the spring is the right hight for the new shackle and fit.
Easy
It should be easy but if you have old springs they may have a slight twist. This will cause the bush to pop out when you fit it. I got round this on mine by cutting a small chamfer on the inside edge of the bush.
Think safe If you think one jackstand is enough use 2 Having the rear of a Mu sitting on your chest makes breathing difficult.

Awesome will do this in the next couple of days and practice my bench press in the meantime just incase :P

Just clarifying do i just take the wheel off the side im working on then put back on and repeat for other side or do i remove both sides and put them on jack stands. 1st way seems safer and more logical but as you say having the rear of my mu resting on my chest may not be comfortable and benchvpress may not be enough to get it off again

If you do lift both sides together you will have less hassle with twisted springs.
My safety comment is just to make sure you do think about these things I always put the wheels under the chassis in case something goes wrong I also dont rely on the factory jack for more than tyre changes. I did learn the hard way about jacks and working under cars but had to learn twice. First time was a ford escort and the wife needed help to lift it off me (only a little bruise) second time was the bighorn but only changing a tyre. No harm done but 15 seconds earlier I would of lost a hand.

I do it without taking the wheels off. I just jack up vehicle as high as I can using the centre of the diff. Put some axle stands under the chassis in front of the diff (near the front spring perches). Lower the vehicle down so that the stands take the weight and then just adjust the jack under the diff to find the optimum position to remove the shackles (one side at a time).

I tried with wheels on as well but ran out of garage roof space Also it is safer with them off as its not so high.
