50mm suspension lift, 1990 bighorn

Postby damo667 » Sat Dec 03, 2011 11:43 pm

So I'm finally getting round to the 50mm suspension lift..

I'm going to disconnect sway bar, flip ball joint, wind out the torsion bars and then get the wheels balanced.A lot of info on here about it which helps..

I was going to just extend the shackles on the back, but sensibility has prevailed and I'm going to get new 'raised' leaf springs..

I found these ones on 4wdstuff.co.nz. I'm not sure of the brand, with the bushing kit, all up $580

Does anyone know of a cheaper way of doing it, ie: I've been told you can get them resprung but not sure what the shelf life on those would be..

Has anyone had this done? Or has anyone found new springs cheaper anywhere else? Or failing both of them,if I have to pay the full price is there a particular brand of spring that are better the others?

Sorry for all the questions but havn't had much of a play with suspension before.. (inless you count fork seals)

Cheers guys

is 4wdstuff still around? He used to be a member here with a quite interesting Mu. Have a search on 4wd and spring on google for other deals
Dont bother resetting springs there life can be measured in weeks. If you have factory shocks you can get away with still using them but if they are non original make sure they have travel left at the end of spring travel
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

after you fit the spring and before you reconect the lower bush on the shock lift the car on the chassis. If the eye of the shock is below the fulley extended spring it has enough travel. Mine had about 25mm left with 50mm hd springs

sweet.. so do you think I can disconnect from the original springs and let it hang down with the car raised and if it finishes 50mm or lower the existing spring the it should be sweet for the new one?..
souds right in theory...

In theory yes but to me it sounds a good way to end up with a car resting on your head. That would be the mother of headaches.
Lift both sides at once so wheels about 6 inches off ground and remove wheels(can do one side at a time but when it comes to fitting springs keep diff as level as possible esspecialy if useing poly bushes) Support chassis at this hight with decent blocks and lower the diff. You can now raise and lower diff to line stuff up. Still requires several swear words but its the best way
