Postby Paulo » Sat Mar 03, 2012 10:16 pm

A freind of mine want to fit extended shackles on the back of his 89 bighorn that gives 1.5 " lift. Is this safe ? or legal here in NZ I have seen few Mu around with extended shackles but some people say that it is dangerous just wanted some clarifications, and opinions from those who run extended shackles..

Cheers

legal view = requires low volume cert
in practise the above is true if your wof issuer notices
Enough people have gone this way that I have to believe that well made shackles are safe.
As things stand at the moment replacement springs for up to 50mm lift are legal no issue.
Couple of things to think about
cert costs 400
shackle lift of 1.5 inches requires shackles 3 inches longer
Your current springs will have sagged so getting springs with a 1.5 inch lift (2 inch lift are more common) will give much more than 1.5 inches
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Cheers for the quick reply. Any suggestions for good affordable lifted springs so far the only affordable ones I can find are from 4wdstuff for about 500 but not sure what is the load on them as a lighter load will be better for comfort and flex maybe...anybody have an experience with them...

is 4wdstuff still around. I thought he closed down.I know his website is still there but no updates on it. Normally there are 2 springs that will fit as the springs are also the same for early bighorn and rodeo as well. Do not buy the heavy duty type as they will be too stiff. I like my Lovells springs but there are many other springs that work well

4wdstuff website looks like its been recently updated...Anyways how much did you pay for your Lovells and how much lift did you get out of them... I need to find a local supplier here in Christchurch.

$340 but that was over 10 years ago. They are probably due for doing again.

I have the standard springs with extended shackles on my rodeo
they are the snake racing 1.5 inch I think

They work really well, helps the springs flex a lot better (probably as my bushes are a bit shagged)
My standard springs are a little sagged, but this worked well as the shackle angle came out better than it would have otherwise
