Factory swaybar disconnect

Postby mattmannz » Wed May 23, 2012 4:07 pm

I just picked up a factory rear swaybar disconnect system and have fitted it to my lwb UBS69. Pretty straight foward system, the swaybar link has some sort of pin in it that the cable pulls out and then winds back in.

The control module only has two wires for power and reversing them switches the action. Looks like the factorys witch also drives some sort of light but I have just wired it with positive and negative on a 15a circuit.

I did some quick mock ups and it looks like this setup could also work on the front, with brackets for the control module and cable retainer necessary.

The swaybar link has about 175mm of travel in it which is quite reasonable. Will update this thread when I get a second unit and begin fitting it to the front.

What vehicles had these? Were they an option?

they are on some but not all 92 to 98 bighorns. Not sure which versions. They sit in place of the left rear swaybar linkage. Cant think of a way to use one on a Mu pre 95 as they are about twice as long as the standard linkage on the front swaybar and no rear sway bar

They seem to be on short wheelbase RS Bighorns, not sure what else.

The one I have seen had it on the right rear, or I assume it was as it was at a wreckers and had been removed but the only missing sway bar link was the right side. This is where I have fitted it but I had to modify the bracket and tap a couple of holes in the chassis as there was no obvious mount.

Geeves have you seen one?

Hey Mate,

I have one in my SWB. A family friend of mine has a LWB Irmisher 1993 and his has one. But his motor dead so its just been sitting there for about 10 years haha and wont sell it.

So I think its a Irmisher option SWB and LWB

that would be excellent then I would just have to wait until a lwb bighorn turned up at pickapart in tauranga or hamilton and beat every man and his dog there

So... Measurements... I saw one of these on a bighorn in the wreckers here, when I get a wizard again ill probably put it in. As far as front goes you might as well just take the whole sway bar off. Unless your doing a lot of traveling I guess

Hey Hamzzz, getting rid of the Safari and going back to the Wizzard??

I have a whole bunch of bits for a SWB Bighorn still at home including one of these that I pulled out of it.

The unit is small probably the size of a A5 piece of paper cut down into a square square.

They mount just on the drivers side by the front of the rear trailing arm it has set wholes. I was going to mount mine on the otherside to get both sides to go a bit further but didnt get there in the end.

yes, the safari is cool and all. but not practical. going for a wizard again haha. i find travel in the rear WITH the swaybar is pretty good anyway, so having this would help but i dont think having 2 would do a whole lot. getting rid of the front swaybar made a big differance tho!

I have removed my rear sway bar, no difference to handling on road but heaps more flex off road.

We only have vehicle inspections at point of sale in Qld.

officialy that is not so. Only reason your getting away with it is that the mechanic missed it. One day he will notice. Thats why I just take the links off and put then back on wof day
