brakes have got me stumped?

Postby wbski007 » Wed Nov 04, 2009 11:35 pm

I wonder if any of you have some ideas on how the brakes worked on my 15' camper, its got me stumped, what in the hell made them work, I know some parts are missing but what??. There's nothing up at the front or by the tongue that indacates any thing else was ever attached there, see photos, all photos are taken from front looking back at axle.

Hi wayne, do you still have original draw bar?? looks like type we have on work trailer. hitch moves on a ram/piston. when pulling or pushing... when pushing it moves simple plunger and causes cables to tighten back to your brackets. brackets move and then apply the drum brakes.
Might be able to get you some pics of work one when i go back in couple of days.

just had a look at a couple of pics of your camper you posted awhile ago. you have a different draw bar to type i was thinking.. so if original? might have been a park brake.. would have looked like an oversive e brake handle... worked the same way.

Thanks, Chrisfng, I don't know if its the original draw bar, it looks like it is but who knows, I see what you mean tho, it must have worked like surge brakes, but used rods or cables instead of hydraulics, if its not to much trouble I'd like to see a picture of the one you have at work, maybe I could get something hooked up, if I have something to go by, no rush tho, cheers Wayne

it looks like a parkbrake, as chris said, it was possably connected to a ram/piston thing, when you pulled it it pulled the cable and locked the brakes so the trailer wont roll away. then you hitch it back on vehicle release brake and drive off.

mate has the same set up on his buggy trailer.
Cheers,
Andrew

Over here we use an override type brake on most caravans. This has a slide in the coupling that under braking pushes a lever back which is cantilevered to pull on the trailer brake. From your brackets you should have cables the the coupling which will also have a handbrake attachment. Newer caravans have a hydrolic system.
Sorry no pics as I cant afford a caravan

The levers are for the cable for the brake actuation. It should have an override coupling (or did have) that pushes on a park brake lever that pulls the cables when the tow vehicle slows. Have a look here for a bit of detail.

There are brake line kits and override couplings available at any trailerparts stores..heaps in ebay too.
