265/75R16 fit on un-modded 94 3.1 MU?

Postby Tbone » Sun Jan 10, 2010 11:59 am

Hi guys, heres yet another couple of tyre fit questions ( ), i've been trawling through the forums and couldn't see any problems but thought i'd ask in case i missed one,

1) I can get a set of 265/75R16 tyres at a good price (which is about 32/10.5/16 i think) but just want to make sure these will fit a standard Mu without having to do any mods? its the 94 3.1 manual on standard 16s, but there is a bit of sag in the rear.

2) I was also considering getting some steel 16x8s as i found some for about $130 each but they are a -28 offset, i understand these are pretty common on our trucks(?) and the rim is correct, (tyre has 7.5rim and recommend 7 to 9") i assume these would not rub on the guards at full lock or articulation with the 32" tyre and this offset?

Thanks.

I'm guessing that 32" tyres will need AT LEAST 2" suspension lift but I still think they will rub on the front wheel arches. The rears should be OK.
A 2" body lift plus the suspension lift is really what you need, but I am only guessing

hmmm, thanks guys, i can't seem to find much info about this size of tyre with least required lift, most people seem to be going for 33s and 2" or more suspension lift (and body lift).

I would prefer to keep suspension lift to a minimum to save cv trouble/keep road handling as is-ish, any idea if a 2" body lift and 1" suspension lift is sufficient with a tyre that size or is it still a bit tight in the front? (in which case i might need to go for a 31" or similar?)

I have 265 / 70 x 16 (Silverstone AT-117 Special) on 16 x 8 rims, zero off set I think, on my 91 MU, with standard suspension. They clear OK, but they come close to the mud flap on lock.

ooh that sounds promising Tom... i think 265/70s are only about an inch smaller in diameter than what i'm looking at.

Wicked, thanks for that pig, looks like they should be smaller than i thought, Any idea what sort of offset you have on yours?

thanks was just about to ask what offset the landcruisers have :)

btw if anyone else is looking at tyre sizes i found an american website called http://www.tirerack.com and if you select "products" at the top then "tyres" then go to "survey results" then select the type of tyre you are after it gives a list of ratings and if you then click the tyre it takes you to a page that shows the tyre from various angles and you can access a list of specs (tyre sizes/dimensions etc..), and user reviews for that particular tyre. not all our brands are there but many are (Firestone Destination M/T etc). and under the "shopping tools" category on the main page if you go to "Tech Center" it explains all about tyre stuff like how to read tyre sizes and speed ratings, how to store them etc... i found it extremely helpful. might save the next person from asking all the same questions again

Cheers for the website above, I didn't realise that the profile was a percentage of width so now I understand that 265/70's are both wider and taller than 245/70's.

Atm I am running 245/70R16 on mags that I am unsure of the width - how hard is this to measure with rubber still on?

I am looking at puttting a 2" body lift (from Trademe) on my Wizard later this month and then tires before the end of the year. Currently looking at 265/70R16 either firestone or bridgestone a/t type tires. Can anyone foresee any issues with this size tire?

I realise that this will have an affect on the accuracy of the speedo and I guess its not as easy as 40 = 50 80 = 100km, can anyone running this size let me know what their speedo readings are for 30,50,70, and 100km. Is it possible to get this calibrated out?

This is all in response to the issues we have had in Whakatane recently and may have again this afternoon. I am a member of the Whakatane Emergency Response Team and during our major event last week when we were activated I only just made it to the depo and we had to go back out to pick up team members before we could assist the public. Would like to be able to ensure that I can get through in most circumstances (its only about 1.5km down the road. Snorkle is also on the list.

Qudos to the Whakatane 4WD club that helped with Evacs.

Congratulations on the good effort.
Body lift should require certification if your mechanic sees it. Speedo error is best sorted by calculation. With my 31s on I drive at 95 with the 32s I drive at 90 and the 33s at 85.
You can get an adapter box made but they aint cheap

Another related question, to my post that is not the thread, how hard is it to make up adapters for the bumpers, I guess the rear will have to stay low for the towbar

Captol: try talking to a speedometer shop, i spoke to Auckland speedometer services (?), with the same question, they told me that if its only 5 or 6% or so different, they can can adjust your speedo with magnets, i can't remember the details but it was gonna cost around $100 i think, give them a call perhaps?

also might pay to find out how far out your speedo is already, if you have a mate with a gps like a navman or tomtom, borrow that and go for a drive on the motorway to figure out what your speedo error is. ie if your speedo shows 100kph while the gps shows 95kph then your speedo is 5% out already, meaning a tyre diameter increase of 5% (which i think a 265/70R16 is from the standard 245 width tyres) would bring it spot on anyway - no need to calibrate. (mine is exactly 5% out with standard size tyres.)

yer I drive long distance with gps to make sure, I have noticed tho that gps don't take into account slope when calculating speed so back to the speedo. My speedo was out originally reading faster than I was travelling and now it reads under by about 7km at 100km. the change from the 245's I had on to the 33's is around 11% from memory
