Winch bar build

Postby nb422 » Thu Jan 15, 2015 9:18 pm

Well yesterday I started on a winch bar build. Overkill steel i know but just using what I had laying around. Mounts are 13mm steel plate and bar itself is rectangular box section with a 6mm wall. Aiming to make wings out of it that follow round and upwards to meet up with the guards. And welding notched angle steel on for the winch plate to bolt to.
Where would I get grade 8.8 bolts for the mounts (Using factory bumper mounts)? And what are peoples opinions on runva 11xp 12v winch? Cheers all

nice work but
you need to angle off the mounting bars or the wof man wont be happy not to mention getting hung up on them
Should of mounted higher
Runva is a reputable winch brand
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Oh yeah those will be cut down when I take it back off to do final welds, just tacking it all in place at the moment. Sits alot higher than it looks, just the brackets make it look low in the photos

re bolts. Any engineer supply or fasterner supply should be able to get them. They are an odd thread (metric fine?) Are they 10 or 12mm?
Might also be worth cross bracing to a third bolt hole to spread the load.
How are you attaching the winch?
Commercial bullbars mount the winch so the mounts face forwards so very little stress on the bolts. A lot of diys have the winch flat with the bolts on a horizontal plane. This puts most of the pull on the back 2 bolts
