wastegate adjustment

Postby wbski007 » Fri May 28, 2010 10:47 pm

OK fella's, see if you can help me out, I adjusted my wastegate for more boost from 9 lbs to 14 lbs buy putting two washers under the spring and it worked great for a few months and the I noticed my boost was only 11 lbs so I added another washer and that brought it back to 14, but after a few weeks its back to 11 lbs again, is the spring weaking or is there something else going on??

Hi Wayne good to see you back. Did you go camping. Am still coming over as soon as my house sells.
It does sound like the spring is loosing its tension.

When the spring is At full travel does it spring bind or is there still travel in the spring IE look to see if all of the coils are touching each other or is there still A small gap between the coils. A spring with slightly less turns on it but the same diameter and wire gauge might be a better solution (Stiffer ((from A spring maker)).

I take iut you have a boost gauge if you know what you are boosting at, seeing as you can install a boost gauge why not install a adjustable bleed valve for the sake of $30? I have played the "spacegate" game a few times but now just put i nteh bleed valve. Adjust it on the fly if you run piping into the cab. Sorry I know its not the answer your looking for, maybe like you say a worn spring or diaphram? Spacing isnt the answer.
interested into why people lift mu's, I have owned a few and fitted 33's to them all, some 12.5 some 13.5. I have never had a problem with rubbing / clearnace. My friends with 35s have a bit of lift but why the million threads about lifting your mu?????

Unfortunately waynes wast gate has no hoses to run a bleed valve. It’s a weird wast gate.
It could be the over boost valve leaking also

here's some photos of my wastgate, it has no small hose going to it like like on the 2.8 and 3.0's, under the white plastic cap there's a 8mm nut and behind the nut is a washer the holds tension on a spring, I added more washers to give the spring more tension and it worked for awhile, its a good sized spring, about 2 inchs long with lots of space between the coils, it doesn't seem possable to me that the spring is loosing tension that fast, but I guess it could be, it droped from 14lbs to 11 in less than a week this time, the first time I did it, it lasted a about 3 months before it droped back. I don't think its the gauge as it responds well and when I added another washer the second time it went rite up to 14lbs.

Pull the spring out and put a solid piece in there and see if that is at 14PSI, the turbo might only make that much boost, and if that the case you don't need the waste gate. Could get rid of the problem...

It doesn'nt seem to be sticking Alan, the rod moves freely. I'll try what Yarno said and see what happens, maybe I can get away with out the wastegate? thank god its easy to get to. How many lbs of boost can I run on my 2.5 and still be on the safe side??
