Postby 4wheeler » Tue Jun 15, 2010 5:21 pm

Hi Guys,Its time for new rims & Mud tyres. I have a 1997 Mu 3.1..The stock alloy rims have a +37.5 offset I see that the older Mu has a 0 offset.I want to run 15x8 rims but they only come in -19 or -24 offset...What rim offset are most guys useing?Cheers

-28 offset 15x8 rims (Speedy rims brand, steel) and 33x12.5 mud tyres on the old style MU are right on the legal limit without flares.

The edge of the tread is just inline with the wheel arches, the tyre sidewall bulges out from them though.

However you do need cert for the tyre size increase.

Be careful fitting 15s to the late Mu The rear brake is much bigger than the early ones due to the drum handbrake. It can be done but its tight
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

4wheeler,
are you sure that you are measuring your offset correctly?
It's the difference between the centreline (between the inner and outer beads) of the rim and the face (surface) where it mounts to your axle.
Have a look here for some info if you want http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html
I have 15 x 8s on my UCS69. I'll try and remember to have a bit of a measure up when I get home tonight and let you know what mine are.

My 15" x 8" steel rims are -19mm offset.
I have these rims on both of my Mus' (UCS55 & UCS69) with no problems (only running 31x10.5).

The stock rims of 4wheelers' 97 Mu are probably 16" x 7" (offset unknown).

If you go from 16x7-37.5 to 15x8+19 the rim outside edge will be about 65-70 mm further out than it was if my calculations are right

EDIT: positive makes the wheel further under the car...

gts001, all references, so far, to 19mm offset have been for negative offset (moving the wheel away from the centreline of the car).

correct +=in so the original wheels are in 37.5mm and the new wheels are out 19 mm so mto get to 0 the rim comes out 35.7 mm then another 19mm out for the negative off set so it has come out 46.7mm from original plus the new rim is 25.4mm (1 inch) wider so half gous on each side so add 1/2 inch(12.7mm) to edge of rim =new rim edge will be 46.7mm+12.7mm=59.7mm
so in my last post I put -and+ to the wrong numbers sorry the new number is the about 60mm out from originol rim edge.I put new wheels on my bighorn that were 50 mm further out than stock and they stick out to farfor wof.If you add flairs to cover them they need cert. You need cert as soon as the tread sticks out past the original guard.I have just kept my old wheels for to get a wof.you can leave flairs on as they dont matter for wof.

Yes those calcs work...Trouble is the full width of stock rim is 195mm.They must be measured from the bead so 7inch is 175 mm app so im guessing same applys for the 8inch add another 5mm a side so the new rim will be about 5mm past the body ,,since i have 60mm from the stock rim to outside of body, plus the tyre comes out past the rim...If i run -19 i will need flares ..No cert as stock rims for warrant...gotcha Im going to run 31/10.5/15 Bridgestone MT...Didnt want to go any bigger as i heard that Mu's are a bit weak in the front CV's...My previous 4x4 was a 92 swb Safari...32/11.5/15.Its time for my wife to enjoy driving, not just me,and she found the Safari a hand full sooo being a careing new age guy,i folded.......For the best i reckon as the Mu's look like they can do the business,Low with a wide wheel base..What do you guys reckon??cheers

very clean looking mu there.I hate the light blue mu sticker on the side.Im runing 31x10.5 15s on 7 inch rims on the bighorn.they are another inch or so wider than the rim each side so stick out even further than the rim does.the only problem ive found with my wheels sticking out so far is the truck ends up blody dirty but then it looks better like that.

Yea almost seems a shame to mud it...still a good Mu is a dirty one.... remember the wheels hit the bank first,,tends to protect the body..cheers
