4gj2 turbo upgrade

Postby KrankY » Wed Nov 24, 2010 6:37 am

was just wondering who's done a turbo upgrade on the 3.1td ?????
i'm building a race car and it now has a ridiculously sized gt5533r (which is so big and heavy it cracks my headers) and i have a mint condition serie 5 twin scroll twin port wastegate turbo looking sad in my shed, but my issues are that this things is much larger than the factory 3.1 turbo andi think i'm going to loose alot of low tourqe any sugestions
Heres the measurements i got but i dont know if i'm measurering it the correct way and using a crap pair of calipers doesn't help.

Compressor
Inducer 43.85 mm
Exducer 62.6 mm

Exhaust
Inducer 63 mm
Exducer 54.3 mm

Try a sequential setup. You get the best of both.Quick spool from the small turbo and boost at high revs from the big turbo. or you could leave the exhaust side of he turbo on your 3.1 and change the compressor wheel and housing to bigger ones.

I really like that.
What size are your turbos?

I've giot a front mount intercooler.
Sizes ummmm the small one is a compensater from the 2,5 and the big one is from the 3 l.The engine is a 2.5TD. The compensator is standard on the late model 2.5 , I basically just added the 3 l turbo. If you look at the bottom turbo (compensator) , the exhaust side is tiny but thats what makes it spool so fast and gives you boost from 1250 rpm.

I have a 3.0 turbo fitted to my 2.8, so if I removed it and refitted the original turbo then added the 3.0, I'd be good to go?

Have you found any increases in top end? or was the gains all low down the rev range?

I don't know how it will react on a 2.8 as the turbo's are simillar sizes, but I think it will be like a 2 stage compessor and it will boost very high.
